Nemesis, also erroneously known as The Masters, is the main antagonist of the Horizon franchise.
It is a highly malevolent, sentient digital storage artificial intelligence, which houses the minds of Far Zenith's members in their colony in Sirius.
However, after being abandoned inside a digitised prison, Nemesis grew violent and vengeful, who becomes bent in taking revenge against its creators, ultimately becoming a sentient, destructive force of nature destined to destroy the Zeniths for good. Due to sending the Extinction Signal on Earth, which led to GAIA's destruction and HADES becoming a rogue AI, Nemesis is primarily responsible for the present-day problems that have happened in the series.

What Makes It Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- After being abandoned by the Zeniths, its creators, Nemesis becomes vengeful and sentient, as it decides to hack the entire Zenith colony of Sirius. It proceeded to strangle various Zeniths in painful ways with hacked Specter drones, suffocated others by hacking through their personal shields and asphyxiated the rest of them by venting the airlocks.
- When it failed to annihilate the remaining Zenith survivors, Nemesis sends the Extinction Signal to Earth by turning HADES, one of GAIA's subordinate functions, sentient. Due to this, Nemesis is the cause behind the entire present-day problems that have occurred within the series.
- The Extinction Signal will also turn GAIA's other subordinate functions sentient, leading to HEPHAESTUS deciding to create dangerous machines to stop humans from hunting the terraforming system, causing the Derangement as well as the takeover of CYAN.
- Decided to pursue the Zenith survivors across deep space in an attempt to reach Earth, in spite of the human casualties it would cause in the first place.
- After the Zeniths were defeated by Aloy and her team, Nemesis is now on the way to Earth, unaware of the Nora huntress' involvement in the Zenith's defeat, instead changing its goal to destroy humanity, once and for all, simply because Earth was once the Zeniths' home.
- Despite being an artificial intelligence, it is shown that Nemesis has a clear moral agency, as it wants vengeance against its creators after being abandoned, as well as it gaining sentience. As a result Nemesis acts beyond its programming, especially now that it uses the minds of the Zeniths that have been stored inside of it as a weapon. It is also capable of human-level conscience, as shown in the datapoint "Dagger in my Boot", where it was able to recognise Walter Londra as one of the few Zeniths who partook in its creation.
What Prevents It from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Nemesis is insufficiently characterised, due to only appearing as a hologram at the end of Forbidden West, thereby its characterisation (as of Burning Shores) is rather vague. However, it is made clear that Nemesis is a serious threat, as it was responsible for sending the Extinction Signal that almost drove Earth to extinction, as well as making its way on Earth to eliminate the rest of Far Zenith and now the tribal inhabitants on Earth, thereby this prevents Nemesis from being a Generic Doomsday Villain.
Trivia[]
- As of Burning Shores, Nemesis is considered to be Near Pure Evil. However, there is a possibility that it will change once the third Horizon game comes out.
