“ | 150 years ago this day, the Northwests asked us lumberfolk to build him a mansion a top the hill. We were told it would be a service to the town, that once a year they would throw a grand party, and all would share in the bounty! It took years of backbreaking labor and sacrifice, but when it was time for the grand party the promised the common folk of the town, they refused to let us in. | „ |
~ The Lumberjack Ghost recalling his past involving Nathaniel Northwest. |
Nathaniel Northwest is a posthumous antagonist of the Disney Channel/Disney XD animated series Gravity Falls, serving as a posthumous character in the Season 1 episode "Irrational Treasure" and the posthumous overarching antagonist of the Season 2 episode "Northwest Mansion Mystery".
He is the cover-up founder of Gravity Falls who was the one responsible for the Lumberjack Ghost's curse, being the originator of the Northwest's infamous reputation.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He and the government lied about him being the founder of Gravity Falls when the town was actually founded by Quentin Trembley, the 8½th President of the United States.
- He ordered a bunch of local lumberjacks to build him a mansion on top of the hill by promising that they were going to have a party every year to celebrate with them, leading at least nineteen lumberjacks to die due to the harsh conditions of the town.
- Once the mansion was finished and the lumberjacks were ready to enter the mansion, he laughed in their faces and closed the door on them, only allowing rich people to come.
- When a mudslide began, causing the death of Archibald Corduroy and at least twenty-one others, Nathaniel watched as Archibald cursed the Northwest family in his final moments.
- This is especially hypocritical considering Nathaniel was initially a poor worker himself.
- It can be assumed that he continued his life of being a backstabbing cheater to an untold amount of people, which would influence the Northwest family to follow in his footsteps for generations, essentially being the indirect cause of all the crimes of his family.
- While he did write a letter warning his descendants about the curse, it was only to continue his disgraceful legacy rather than care for his descendants.
- While he had comedic moments such as hitting himself with an oar until he blacked out, eating an oak tree thinking he was a wizard, and being a waste shoveling village idiot before being picked to be the fake founder, they are not detracting since the first two are visual gags and the third one was before he became evil, and he gets played completely seriously in his last appearance.
- While he never speaks, he has enough characterization, as he is shown to be manipulative due to tricking the lumberjacks into building his mansion and sadistic due to laughing at them before locking them out.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- While it would be unfair to compare him to Bill Cipher due to him having stronger resources, he fails the Heinous Standards to Darlene, who killed at least thirteen people by eating them and turning their bodies into mummies with less resources, and while Nathaniel killed more, Darlene is more direct than Nathaniel along with being more brutal and more sadistic.
Trivia[]
- Nathaniel Northwest is, alongside Darlene, one of the two Gravity Falls villains to be Near Pure Evil.
- Ironically, his great-great granddaughter, Pacifica Northwest, is a Near Pure Good, and Pacifica's Goodness Zone crossing is the opposite of Nathaniel's MEH.
