| ā | 150 years ago this day, the Northwests asked us lumberfolk to build him a mansion a top the hill. We were told it would be a service to the town, that once a year they would throw a grand party, and all would share in the bounty! It took years of backbreaking labor and sacrifice, but when it was time for the grand party the promised the common folk of the town, they refused to let us in. | ā |
| ~ The Lumberjack Ghost recalling his past involving Nathaniel Northwest. |
Mayor Nathaniel Northwest is a minor antagonist in Disney's Gravity Falls franchise.
He is the overarching antagonist of the episodes "Irrational Treasure" and "Northwest Mansion Mystery, having been the the cover-up founder of Gravity Falls who was the one responsible for the Lumberjack Ghost's curse, being the originator of the Northwest family's infamous reputation.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He and the government lied about him being the founder of Gravity Falls when the town was actually founded by Quentin Trembley, the 8½th President of the United States.
- He ordered a bunch of local lumberjacks to build him a mansion on top of the hill by promising that they were going to have a party every year to celebrate with them, leading at least nineteen lumberjacks to die due to the harsh conditions of the town.
- Once the mansion was finished and the lumberjacks were ready to enter the mansion, he laughed in their faces and closed the door on them, only allowing rich people to come, and when a mudslide began, causing the death of Archibald Corduroy and at least twenty-one others, Nathaniel watched as Archibald cursed the Northwest family in his final moments.
- This is especially hypocritical considering Nathaniel was initially a poor worker himself.
- It can be assumed that he continued his life of being a backstabbing cheater to an untold amount of people, which would influence the Northwest family to follow in his footsteps for generations, essentially being the indirect cause of all the crimes of his family.
- This finds some evidence in the Northwest Cover-up document, where it is stated that Nathaniel was hated by everyone that knew him and would not be missed by anybody after his death.
- While he did write a letter warning his descendants about the curse, it was only to continue his disgraceful legacy rather than genuine care for his descendants.
- While he never speaks on-screen, he has enough characterization and personality, as he is shown to be manipulative due to tricking the lumberjacks into building his mansion and sadistic due to laughing at them before locking them out.
- His death from choking out on oak bark was not played for sympathy and was well-deserved karma for his horrible actions as well as the egregious attempt at proving he was a so-called "wizard."
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- While it would be unfair to compare him to Bill Cipher due to him having stronger resources, he fails the Heinous Standards to Darlene, who is a serial killer who kills people by eating them and turning their bodies into mummies with less resources, with at least thirteen people she killed being shown and it being established to be routine for her. It's also interesting to note that while Nathaniel had a higher kill count than Darlene, she was more direct, brutal and sadistic with her killings meaning this is a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- Ironically, his great-great granddaughter, Pacifica Northwest, is a Near Pure Good, and Pacifica's Goodness Zone crossing is the opposite of Nathaniel's Moral Event Horizon crossing.
