"Mother" is the main antagonist of Robert Bloch's 1959 novel Psycho and the 1960 film adaptation of the same name.
She at first seems to be the actual mother of Norman Bates but is soon revealed to be a twisted split personality of Norman that originated from the sexual abuse he suffered as a child.
Her physical appearance was portrayed by the late Anthony Perkins, while her voice was portrayed by the late Virginia Gregg.

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- It was revealed that she had killed two women before the events of the story.
- She psychologically abused Norman into helping her cover up her crimes and notably went after young women that she believed Norman might have an attraction to.
- In the infamous shower scene, she brutally killed Marion Crane with an axe. In the movie she used a knife instead, but the kill was still extremely brutal.
- She killed Detective Milton Arbogast in order to make sure he didn't figure out the truth about Marion Crane's disappearance.
- She nearly killed Marion's sister Lila Crane after it was revealed that "Mother" was an alternate personality of Norman.
- It was heavily implied that she had even more kills.
- She was easily the most heinous character when it came to her crimes, as Norma Bates' crimes are unique enough for them to not be compared.
- While Norman was a tragic scapegoat that didn't want to do anything wrong, she is a vile monster that killed in order to keep Norman to herself and out of some minor sadism as well.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Due to her extremely high kill count only being implied, she suffered from Fridge Horror.
- She had moral agency issues due to being born out of the negative thoughts and trauma from the sexual abuse Norman went through at the hands of Norma.
