I am the god of this new world... And the headmaster of the Ultimate Academy! The one, the only... Monokuma!
~ Monokuma

Monokuma is the secondary antagonist of the Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony video game. He is a fictional A.I. version of the original mascot who masterminded multiple Killing Games and acts as the host of the 53rd Killing Game.

He was voiced by the late Tarako Isono (credited as TARAKO) in Japanese and Brian Beacock in English.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has hosted several Killing Games in the past, including Rantaro Amami's. This would make him potentially responsible for the deaths of countless teenagers, given that they typically have 16 participants.
  • He kidnapped 15 students (not including Tsumugi), locking them up in the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles, then forcing them to compete in the 53rd Killing Game.
  • He hit his children for acting out.
  • He let the students try to escape through the Death Road of Despair, just to taunt them when they realize how hopeless escape is.
  • For the first game, he makes a threat that if nobody commits murder within 24 hours, he will kill every student. One hour before the deadline, he warned them with a violent video.
  • He executes students in very merciless and brutal ways for own sake.
  • To make things worse, he knew Kaede was innocent but still went along in executing her for Tsumugi's sake.
  • After Monodam kills Monokid, he is horrified at first but then casually dismisses his death.
  • For the second chapter, he gave every player motivations to escape into the outside world via Monopads (although in contrast Ryoma would get mocked on his video for having no reason to live.) This would motivate Kirumi to kill Ryoma who had lost his will to live.
  • He helps Kokichi lure the remaining students into the virtual world by planting a flashback light in it so that the next murder can take place.
  • He causes the deaths of Monophanie and Monotaro during Gonta's execution.
  • He blew up all of his children one by one in the sixth trial for simply disappointing him, then showed no remorse for it and only questioned why they existed in the first place.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite being taken seriously for majority of screentime, he still has several comedic moments, which sometimes don't even tie into his sadism (such as ranting about how he hates Sonic the Hedgehog).
  • He has some moral agency issues due to being a robot created by Team Danganronpa with the intentions of being as sadistic as possible. However he does have a clear personality and can think on his own (evidenced when everything was over, he casually quit his job and waved until being crushed by a rock), so this is a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • Only the Danganronpa V3 version of Monokuma counts as Near Pure Evil as it is a fictional entity separate from the mainstream Monokuma, who can not stand out due to being completely controlled by Junko Enoshima.
  • He references Dr. Eggman, another Near Pure Evil, when exclaiming his hatred towards Sonic the Hedgehog.
