“ | You know... We talked a lot, the other versions of us, when we were stranded in that dimension alone... Before we started eating each other. We talked a lot about what turned us. A few of us... our fathers raised us to take over. The rest... there was something else that turned us... opened our eyes to who we really were. I'm guessing that hasn't happened to you yet. You haven't yet realized how different you are from the people of this planet. How stupid it is for you to waste any time protecting them, fighting for them... without getting anything in return. When they could be worshipping you. | „ |
~ Mohawk Mark's philosophy, as he explains it to the Mainstream Mark. |
Markus Sebastian "Mark" Grayson, also known as Mohawk Mark or Invincible, is a major antagonist in the Image Comics series Invincible.
A much more detached and sociopathic variant of the original Invincible, Mohawk Mark was the emperor of Viltrum Empire in his home dimensions through a series of unknown events sometime after helping his father take over Earth. Upon being approached by Angstrom, who promised to expand his empire's influence and territory across the multiverse in exchange for ruining the reputation of Mainstream Mark's reputation on Earth, Mohawk Mark accepted it, participating and playing a key role in the Invincible War.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Even before becoming a tyrant, Mohawk Mark was always a bit "off" as described by Robot, showing far more sociopathic tendencies and lacking any of the benevolent intentions of Mainstream Mark, instead only being interested in being worshipped like a god.
- While he told Invincible that killing Atom Eve had left a void in his life, implying he cared for her, this was likely just a twisted and perverted obsession, especially considering that his way of filling said void was to use several human slaves who looked like her as concubines.
- Unlike his other counterparts, whose empires mostly rely on Fridge Horror and are never seen on-page or explored on, not to mention they all share the same common crimes of participating in the Invincible War, Mohawk Mark manages to stand out from them due to his empire actually being shown and his crimes having additional weight due to torturing Angstrom Levy and planning on using him to expand his empires across various worlds.
- While the Heinous Standards of Invincible are astronomically high, with planetary genocide and destruction being fairly common, not to mention being the Emperor of Viltrum Empire means that he has resources comparable to the likes of Thragg and has to compete with him, Mohawk Mark easily surpasses it due to planning on using Angstrom to stretch his empire across various realities, making him an interdimensional threat. This isn’t Fridge Horror as we see just how destructive Mohawk Mark gets on-panel, with the Viltrumites leveling entire cities in his name.
Background[]
- When his father approached him to join the Viltrumite Empire and make Earth part of it, he didn't hesitate to accept the offer.
- He slaughtered all of the members of his home world's Teen Team (with the exception of Robot who faked his death) after they refused to join him in his goals of letting Earth be taken over by the Viltrum Empire, even including the likes of Atom Eve.
- Moreover, Mohawk Mark had genuinely expected them to accept the offer, which shows his inability to put himself in other people's shoes.
- At some point, he became the Viltrumite Emperor and ruled the Earth with an iron fist. We get a glimpse of how he retained his control when Anissa threw an infant Monster Girl at San Francisco in his name, attempting to use it to destroy the city. While this occurred after his death, it's made clear that instances like this had happened before while he was in power.
Invincible[]
- Following an offer from Angstrom Levy to expand his empire across the multiverse, he joined his other variants in the Invincible War. There, he attacked Stronghold Penitentiary, freeing several villains before attempting to kill the Mainline Invincible. He also leveled all of New York City on the third day of the war.
- After regrouping with his variants and betraying Angstrom, he suggested torturing him for access to his powers.
- Although he teamed up with the Mainline Invincible against Sinister Mark, this doesn’t make him on and off as he only did so to get revenge on both Sinister Mark and Angstrom Levy for the pain that they caused him.
- When Angstrom has a change of heart and tries returning Mohawk Mark to his home dimension, he kidnaps Angstrom and takes him with him.
- After returning home, he attempted to use Angstrom as a meat puppet for access to other dimensions to expand his empire, putting him through rigorous torture for it. When Angstrom doesn't cooperate, he keeps him alive and in constant pain while his scientists look for a way to duplicate his powers. Even Mainline Invincible was horrified at seeing Angstrom being tortured when he arrives in Mohawk Marks dimension.
- Although his death, where he is torn apart from his insides by Robot, was brutal, it wasn't played for sympathy due to the heinousness of his previous crimes.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He displayed instances of genuine affability with his Mainstream Counterpart following their team-up against Sinister Mark. He openly expressed gratitude towards him for previously saving his life and also showed him Angstrom's subdued state to quell his fears of Angstrom ever returning.
- He has standards against cannibalism and was disgusted by Sinister Mark encouraging it, alongside being a serial cannibal himself. While he did partake in eating one of his variants, it's established that he took no pleasure from it and abstained from any further cannibalism.
