Tighten has declared this article is to be renamed to
"Master Belch (EarthBound)" for the following reasons:
Master Belch (Novelization)
"It's Tighten, not Hal!"

Buuurp! So you are Ness? ...I see... Gyork! Gyork! Gyork! There's a prophecy that a boy will destroy Master Giygas. Heeg! Heeg! Heeg! You make me laugh so hard... If Master Giygas is scared of someone... he would have to be worse than the greatest evil... Garg! Ga! Garg! Ga! Ga! Ga! I'll take you down big time, so get ready for the worst fight of your life! Gha Gha Gha! Get ready to feel the pain of true nausea! Ghe Ghe! Come on, let's go!
~ Master Belch

Master Belch, later known as Master Barf, is a supporting antagonist of the 1994 science fantasy video game Earthbound/Mother 2. He is a massive pile of living vomit and a high-ranking member of Giygas' army who is responsible for leading the zombie invasion of Threed on his behalf.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He kidnapped and enslaved multiple peaceful Mr. Saturns, keeping them chained up in his factory while forcing them to produce Fly Honey for him. He also uses an army of tiny Slimes to attack any intruder in his base to prevent them from being freed.
  • With the backup of Giygas's influence over Eagleland, he personally took over and terrorized the town of Threed (which has a population of 1,500 people) with the help of his army of 2000 zombies, ghosts and several other monsters he resurrected from the North Graveyards. This caused it to develop a gloomy atmosphere and people would have to hide in their houses out of fear of being killed or taken. They were seemingly not safe their either, however, as Master Belch set up a monstrous Boogie Tent disguised as a regular circus tent there to store Fly Honey and his Zombie Corps headquarters. To make sure nobody could stop him, he also had ghost guards in the tunnel to prevent people from entering the town, which they can only enter if they play loud happy music.
  • He promised his minions that he would revive them from their constant state of suffering from being undead, which he never fulfills.
  • Likely under his orders, a prostitute lured Ness and Paula into a hotel so the monsters could ambush and imprison them underground in the graveyard. It is also mentioned he has done this to multiple other people in the Guidebook.
  • Inside his factory, he mocks Ness and friends for being too weak to defeat Giygas and the fact that he has taken over Fourside, then poisons and tries to kill them, only to get distracted by Fly Honey.
  • He attacks and prepares to kill Ness, Paula and Jeff again when encountering them in the Deep Darkness, only to be defeated by Poo.
  • Inside the Magicant, it is indicated that he is spiteful towards Ness for beating him and gets mad at him for destroying his pride.
  • He stands out because he is one of the most sadistic, arrogant and cruel bosses in the game, unlike many others who don't have a personality or are too comedic. He is one of the few villains who seems to actually take joy in killing a group of children while some of his crimes, such as the undead people suffering are played for horror.
  • He is by far the least redeemable character in the entire franchise, with even Fassad seeming to care for his mouse and Porky at least having ambiguous care for his family and Ness while being affect by abuse. Belch cares for nobody but himself and has no tragedy, redeeming qualities, honor, etc.
  • Unlike most villains in the game, he seemingly follows Giygas out of his own free will (with no signs this is done out of loyalty opposed to hunger for power.) Even his own minions are baffled at the possibility of him being evil enough to do this. This makes him almost just as, if not as bad as Fassad.
  • Despite the immensely high heinous standards set by Giygas, Porky and Fassad, he sticks out with far lower resources than them as the former two are god-like with massive armies and Fassad has multiple trained soldiers equipment (including heavy tanks) and presumably his Magypsy abilities, while Belch is fairly weak and has to rely on his Fobbies and undead army to perform.
  • Despite his comedic moments, he is still taken as a seriously in-universe, with many of his crimes being played for actual horror and proving to be an actual threat to the protagonists, especially in his final battle.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Though not a full-on comic relief, he is still not taken fully seriously due to his over-the-top reactions to seeing Fly Honey which make him ignore everything around him and being subjected to some potty humor jokes such as being referred to as "the smelliest" in a menacing way or burping constantly. It doesn't help that some villains like Giygas are in contrast are taken completely seriously despite the usually light-hearted nature of the game.
