Marie Campbell and Henry Barrow are the main antagonists of the indie game Killer Frequency by Team 17 Digital.
Following the death and cover-up of her boyfriend, George Barrow, Marie and her son, Henry Barrow, become deranged serial killers searching out people involved in his murder, ranging from those directly involved to family of those who were on the off chance they had died.
Their Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Them Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Marie instructed Henry to Man murder a victim at the Infinity Arcade at the end of the prologue and raised him to be a killer.
- To prevent people from phoning for help, Marie cut the phone lines, murdering Deputy Sheriff Matthews. Leslie declined to detail the murder because it was so heinous and brutal. Matthrew's death was also unavoidable, as he was slain just before the events of the game begin.
- Under the false identity of Dawn, Marie would call Forrest Nash under the premise of being a potential victim of the Whistling Man, albeit this was a front for her to conduct murders.
- It was heavily implied that Marie groomed Henry to be a serial killer from a young age so that he could aid her in her plans of vengeance, having him pose as another Whistling Man and confessing to having taught him to never run from a fight in her interview, siccing her son on Murphy when the latter taunted him on radio to a duel as Henry beat poor Murphy into a state of unconsciousness before stuffing him in a dumpster. This meant Marie's indirectly to blame for Murphy's death under the following scenarios:
- If Forrest chose Alex or Jericho, Murphy would die as the plant collapsed, killing Murphy as he burned alive, due to Alex not knowing the location and Jericho being elderly and taking too long.
- If Forrest gave Katherine incorrect instructions, the plant would collapse on top of Murphy while it burned, killing him before he could be saved.
- What made Murphy's potential death worse was that Murphy had no involvement in the deaths and Marie and Henry targeted purely out of spite. Even assuming he was saved by Nash, the fact they were willing to target people who had no involvement in the death of George proves how malicious they could be.
- Marie told Henry to pursue a gathering of youngsters, killing Jimmy who dressed as the Whistling Man to terrify his companions, his face being excoriated as he's killed. Jimmy's passing couldn't be kept away from no matter what the player's contribution.
- Marie wounded Jason Parker in the stomach after going up against him, possibly prompting his demise if Forrest didn't pursue the right choice.
- On the off chance that Casey was given some unacceptable data, Jason would pass on from his injuries notwithstanding assuming John was sent.
- On the off chance that anybody other than John was sent, they would not be able to assist with treating Parker and Parker would pass away despite treatment.
- In the event that Forrest neglected to save Official Martinez, her throat will be cut by Henry.
- Marie provided requests to her child on who to kill, focusing on Sandra Sharpe. On the off chance that the Player didn't act likewise to get Sandra to hotwire her vehicle to get away, she would be killed either by the actual vehicle if she tugged on the wrong wires or by Henry Barrow himself.
- Marie sent Henry after Maurice Russel, of and if Forrest didn't act appropriately, Maurice would be killed by the Whistling Man. If Forrest took too long on the telephone by either re-thinking or requesting that Russel sent over the fax once more, the Whistling Man would kill Maurice by going into the room he was in light of the fact that Maurice took too long to even consider moving or when he understood the calls were a distraction. Maurice attempted to hide but was killed and stabbed to death, his scream confirming his demise.
- On the off chance that Forrest failed the quick-time event about cranking the volume down, Maurice's position would be revealed, and the Whistling Man would take his life.
- After the radio had been put in the mystery archive, assuming Maurice attempted to conceal himself under the work area, in the actual chronicle, or even escape through the flight of stairs, or couldn't lock the entryway, he would be killed by Henry.
- No matter what choice was picked, if Forrest didn't heed the warning about hollering when he's prepared, Maurice would be killed as the Whistling Man discovered him attempting to enter his concealing spot.
- If Forrest was successfully tricked by Marie's front as Dawn and offered the section code, Marie would erupt into a giggling fit prior to entering the property, killing Roller Ricky's pet canine, Max, prior to shooting Ricky as he tried to find his rifle that Dawn has stolen.
- This was made more intolerable as Forrest could hear Ricky wailing as his canine bit the dust before he was shot and killed.
- Even if Forrest didn't fall for Marie's front and successfully saved Roller Ricky by giving Dawn the wrong code, alerting him of her attempt to break into the Rink, she would express annoyance before attempting one last ditch effort to bust in for the kill, breaking a window and only giving up when Roller Ricky proved himself to armed and made a hasty retreat upon realizing her attempt to kill Ricky is foiled.
- Marie, unable to exact revenge on Kim and Peter Stine due to their demise, opted for Henry to settle the score with their surviving son, Eugene Stine. Henry was armed with a chainsaw as he hunted Eugene, who was a young teenager and had nothing to do with George's death, purely doing this out of a twisted sense of revenge by targeting their helpless offspring whom Forrest had to guide to safety in order to ensure his survival.
- If Forrest didn't make the right decisions, Virginia would be killed by Henry Barrow.
- In the scenario where Forrest contacted Ponty's Pizza, modified his order to slow roast instead of garlic bread, and confirmed it, the delivery would be delayed, resulting in Virginia's call ending tragically.
- Should Forrest call either Chalupacabra's or Grilling Spree, the staff (Gary or Harry) would take care of the order and commit to delivering it to the "same place as before". This call was always from Dudley of the Brotherly Fraternity of Engineers, who were clearly not the same partying frats from Virginia's neighborhood. Virginia called again, but this time, just as she pleaded with who she thought was Clive before Henry killed her.
- Carrie's friends would be slaughtered by Henry Barrow unless Forrest made the right decisions with Carrie being the only one who was spared.
- Henry would blow up a gas station to kill Chuck Brody and was willing to kill innocent people inside and assuming Forrest called the wrong gas station, everyone inside, including Chuck Brody would be killed.
- Even assuming Forrest saved Chuck, who would, in turn, evacuate the other customers by demanding they flee, the fact Henry was willing to blow up a bunch of innocent people was telling of how brutal and cruel he can be.
- Marie intended to kill her sister, Peggy, due to their parents already having passed on by the time Marie got to her revenge plot and if Forrest didn't make the right decisions, Peggy could be killed.
- In the event that Forrest didn't demonstrate that Peggy recollected Marie, Marie would kill Peggy.
- If Forrest didn't save an adequate number of individuals, Marie would do without the meeting, having Henry kill Forrest prior to confirming she would kill her sister shortly afterward.
- Marie had clear moral agency, as, when told there were other people who were forced into silence or uninvolved in her beloved's passing, she legitimized her activities in spite of having a mere moment of pause, demonstrating that she knew that she's done horrendous things but refused to take responsibility.
- On the off chance that Teddy Gallows lied during the meeting, Marie would kill him (though some might say this was fairly legitimate given Teddy's part in George's passing as regardless of it being a mishap, Teddy showed no regret and even faulted George for his own downfall).
- During her meeting, Marie pinned the blame for George's demise onto Ricky, and in any event, when told by Forrest and Teddy himself that Ricky was uninformed, she pushed any tangled sentiments of conflict aside by expressing that since Ricky didn't come forward, he's still responsible despite Ricky being ignorant and feeling enormous culpability in spite of this.
- Marie was furious at Forest for assisting Maurice in "locking her sweet boy" away in the archives in spite of her "boy" being a serial killer intending to kill Maurice and other people.
- In the Golden Ending with all possible survivors saved, Marie was surrounded by police and instead of surrendering, chose to throw herself into the river to evade justice, though it's unknown whether Marie survived this as her body was never found. Henry, however, was arrested by police and taken into custody for his crimes, ending their reign of terror once and for all.
What Prevents Them from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite their heinous actions, they were tragic villains, as Marie was described as a sweet woman prior to the accidental death of her boyfriend, George, in a prank gone wrong. Marie was shunned and thrown out of the house when she refused to keep quiet after everyone else gave in to the pressure Teddy's father possessed as they covered up George's death as a drunk accident. Furious, Marie raised her son, Henry, as a serial killer in order to enact revenge, waiting for him to grow old enough to assist her in her revenge killings, grooming him to be a killer, and considering Henry had no files of his existence prior, it's likely Marie kept him sheltered from the outside world to ensure her influence was absolute. Even Forrest sympathized with Marie despite viewing her actions as morally unjust as he said she's been through hell, indicating he felt sorry for her despite everything.
- That being said, this was a minor prevention given Marie and Henry were both brutal and sadistic killers and Forrest himself was more than willing to call Marie out for her actions as he pointed out that people were silenced. Their willingness to take things out on innocent people like Murphy and Eugene who had nothing to do with their tragedy, one of whom was an old man in over his head and the other being a teenager.
- They both cared deeply for each other as mother and son as when she was surrounded by police, Marie shouted for Henry to run for it and not caring much for her own potential capture. Marie also cared about her deceased boyfriend, George Barrows, as his tragic death was what started her downward spiral and Henry presumably cares about him too given, he's all too willing to assist his mother in avenging him. Despite killing her if the correct choices were not made, Marie started crying when she killed Peggy, implying she did care about her.
- Marie was willing to spare her sister if Forrest proved she remembered her sister and makes the correct choices. Henry was also willing to spare Carrie regardless of whether her plans worked or not, either leaving her as the sole survivor or another survivor assuming her friends were saved by Forrest, both of them showing a sense of mercy and honor.
- It's debatable whether Henry had full agency given he was raised by Marie as there were no government records of him, meaning that Marie had him isolated from society, not allowing him to develop like a regular child who would have social networks and family to influence them and presumably groomed him to be a killer for at least eighteen years meaning he had no true support system and it's debatable if Henry understands what he's doing is wrong.
- Considering Henry was willing to kill Forest Nash and made an explicit threat to murder him despite not speaking, and given his sadistic tendencies, he was probably at least enjoying what he's doing even if he didn't fully grasp whether it's wrong or not and considering Henry was capable of acts of mercy as evidenced with his interaction with Carrie, this was a minor prevention.
