~ Mal. |
Mal is the main antagonist of Total Drama All-Stars, the fifth season in the Canadian animated franchise Total Drama.
He is the sinister alternate personality of the Total Drama contestant Mike, who appeared as one of the former's alternate personalities sealed up in his mind and resurfaces when Mike suffers a concussion in the fifth season's second episode, leading Mal to win back the control of Mike's body and sabotage the competition from that point onwards. He is Mike's eternal foe and arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Cory Doran, who also voiced Mike and his other personalities.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Long before the events of the show, Mal "practically" ruled the juvie which Duncan attended, always doing things to make the guards lock him up. He was likely very feared, if Duncan's tone of voice when talking about him is any indication.
- After being reawakened from Mike's psyche thanks to a concussion caused by Scott, he imprisons Mike's other personalities Chester, Svetlana, Vito and Manitoba Smith within Mike's mind, preventing them from assisting Mike.
- Not only that, but he also forces them to do menial works they don't enjoy, like forcing Svetlana to carve fishes out of butter or she would cease to exist; or forcing Manitoba Smith to Lazo all of Mike's dreams and burn them. Although these acts aren't seriously taken, the suffering of the personalities and their unhappiness at being imprisoned do are.
- Possesses Mike occasionally, making him break the belongings of his teammates (like Sam's GameGuy, Sierra's phone, Duncan's knife or Cameron's glasses, tripping the latter to do so), even though many of them are Mike's friends.
- Sabotages the obstacle course challenge's spinning machine, leading Courtney to be launched into a tree and hurt herself.
- During the Blue Harvest Moon challenge, leaves Cameron alone so he would be attacked and killed by Camp Wawanakwa's ravenous animals, sends a bird to attack Duncan (who was starting to recognize him) and nearly bashes Zoey, Mike's girlfriend no less, in the head with a tree branch but desists at the last minute to avoid being caught.
- Traps Mike within his own mind when Mike tries to summon his other personalities by hitting himself with a rock, chaining Mike to a giant rock and intending to leave him trapped in his mind most likely for the rest of his life, essentially a fate worse than death.
- Steps on Chef Hatchet's hands when he goes to retrieve him from his exile at Boney Island just to be cruel.
- Savagely beats up Izzy when they have to fight just as she was hearing Mike's internal cries for help.
- During the boat race, destroys most of the available boats so no one can win and nearly allows Zoey to be eaten alive by piranhas, only resorting to rescue her so no one would suspect about him.
- Rigs the votes to unfairly vote Cameron off, and when his attempt fails because of Duncan's arrest, he tries to frame Alejandro Burromuerto from doing it despite hours earlier offering him to join forces to win the game.
- Sabotages Cameron's friendship with Gwen and Courtney's relationship with Scott during the 100th episode by lying to the former that Gwen wanted to betray him and asking him to kiss Courtney just as she had accepted being Scott's girlfriend, making them fight. Although Cameron manages to restore his friendship and trust in Gwen by pulling him out of the river to safety.
- When Cameron nearly falls into a hole, he promises him to go for help but in reality returns with a rock to murder him, though fortunately, Cameron had already fallen into the hole to a lake, yet Mal shrugged it off that he didn't get to kill him.
- After Cameron was removed from the show for all the injuries he sustained thanks to Ezekiel, he taunts the bandaged Cameron, taking advantage that he can't talk with his bandaged mouth.
- During the second obstacle course's challenge, painfully forces Svetlana into giving him her athletic abilities, which inside Mike's mind makes Svetlana suffer, to hurt Alejandro Burromuerto, who had started suspecting about him, even managing to hurt Alejandro's wrist before and vote him off later on (although it can be fair Alejandro did deserve it, given his actions in the two seasons he competed in (World Tour and All-Stars).
- Sadistically reveals during the ice cream challenge the offensive chart Courtney had drawn explaining how she intended to eliminate everyone to win the competition, shattering Courtney's relationships with Scott, Gwen and Zoey, leaving her with no friends and causing her elimination that same night (though Courtney arguably deserved it, as she was such a dangerous contestant as well).
- Laughs when it's revealed that two of the show's interns haven't been feed since a long time ago.
- He provokes the Drama Machine into going after Gwen.
- He causes the death of a sentient fire plant to prevent Scott and Courtney from getting fudge for their sundaes.
- During the treasure hunt challenge, tries to kill Gwen with a pipe at the remains of Chris McLean's cottage (an act that even shocks and terrifies Chris enough to the point he runs to his panic room) but desists once she turns back. He then makes it look like he will help her find Chris' portrait but instead pushes a loose rubble on top of her, which could have killed her. Though he promises Gwen to go for help, he apathetically leaves her to her fate (though Gwen was fortunately able to escape).
- Inside his subconscious, he psychologically tortures Mike by falsifying the latter's driver's license with Mal's name to make Mike doubt himself as the original personality. However Mike eventually realized the trick that the license was a construct of his mind.
- Rope snares Scott so he could allow Fang to beat him, fully aware of Fang's obsession with hurting Scott.
- Before the final challenge, once Zoey makes clear that she knows the truth about him, he taunts her by saying that Mike will never come back. This even leads Zoey later to speculate if maybe Mal is the real personality and Mike was an alter, nearly shattering their relationship forever.
- During the pre-finale mini challenge to get their helpers, he shoots his meat cannon at Zoey before freeing Alejandro and Heather from their balloons to assist him in the final challenge.
- He privately admits in the confessional that he plans to "bury alive" Alejandro and Heather if they don't help him.
- Before Alejandro comes up with a way to cross the toxic waste level, Mal tries to needlessly throw Heather into the toxic waste, which could have easily killed her or at the very least horribly mutated her like it happened in the cases of Ezekiel and Dakota for the rest of her life. While ultimately desisted from doing it, he likely desisted because if he harmed Heather, Alejandro would not assist him anymore.
- Throws the injured Cameron and Gwen off the lava level, nearly knocking them into the toxic waste level, which would have likewise horribly mutated them had they touched the toxic waste.
- Tackles Zoey into swamp water level and tries to drown her, though then he stops due to Mike and his personalities resetting his mind by destroying the tower that gives him control over Mike's body.
- However, this act involved Chester, Svetlana, Vito and Manitoba Smith sacrificing themselves to allow Mike from taking the control of his body back, ceasing to exist in the process despite Mike retaining their abilities, making Mal indirectly responsible for their "deaths". While Mal didn't expect them to go through that sacrifice, he shows no remorse once he learns that they gave up their existences to stop him.
- Lunges at Mike to attack him one last time before he is killed and finally wiped out from Mike's mind for good, despite his pathetic attempts to convince Mike to let him keep existing within his psyche.
- Although he is one of Mike’s personalities, he doesn’t suffer from moral agency issues as, like the other personalities, he has his own character and motivations while also being fully aware of right and wrong, as evidenced when he decides to save Zoey because he knows that's what Mike would do.
- Unlike every other Total Drama villain (except Scarlett), he has no redeeming qualities and is taken completely seriously with only a few comedic moments that don't generally distract from his villainy and are subverted later on.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Although it would be unfair to compare him to Chris McLean due to the large resource gap, he still fails the Heinous Standards (especially considering he has a large amount of alter-ego physical and intellectual abilities) to Scarlett, who tried to blow up Pahkitew Island with everyone on it, and Courtney, who has been willing to kill over 20 people across her time on the show. Both were contestants just like him.
Trivia[]
- One of the possible inspirations for Mal, if his voice actor Cory Doran's comments at a FANDOM interview on that he would like for Mike to have a "total crazy guy" for an alternate personality prior to the creation of Total Drama All-Stars are of any indication, was the DC Comics villain the Joker, who is Pure Evil instead.
- Mal is, alongside Scarlett, one of the only two official Total Drama villains to be Near Pure Evil.
