Major Marquis Warren is the main protagonist of the 2015 western film The Hateful Eight.

He is an extremely brutal bounty hunter and former Union soldier who gets involved in a complicated conspiracy amidst the winter of Wyoming.

He was portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, who also portrayed Stephen in Django Unchained.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Due to his past as a slave, he is extremely xenophobic against white people and uses many racial slurs like the slur “Crackers”.
  • During his time in the Civil War, Warren is responsible for the mass killing of 37 Union POWs and 43 Confederate guards at Wallenbeck, by burning them to death, he burned the Confederate guards purposefully and the Union POW’s were killed accidentally. These murders were not acts of war but rather executions, he never states it was in battle and even if he did he still enjoyed in the act of killing them, so it’s still heinous.
  • Warren’s modus operandi as a bounty hunter is to kill his targets, even when capturing them alive is possible. This is best shown in the first time we see him where he has 3 dead criminals on the back of his horse.
  • Warren’s hatred for the Confederacy extends to anyone associated with it, as shown in his interactions with Chris Mannix. He is quick to threaten Mannix with violence for his racist views, pointing a gun at him and threatening to force him to ride at the front of the stagecoach in the freezing weather if he continues to speak hatefully. Warren's animosity toward the Confederates and their sympathizers is so intense that it borders on sadism, particularly in the way he recounts and revels in his past killings of Confederates.
  • Warren carries a forged letter from Abraham Lincoln, which he uses to manipulate others, particularly white people, by disarming their suspicions and gaining their trust, and it also lets him get what he wants easier.
  • Sadistically recounts the humiliation and murder of Sanford Smithers' son. Warren forces the young man to march naked in the snow and perform oral sex on him before killing him. Just because of his father’s crimes. Although it’s not confirmed whether this was a lie or not, Its still extremely possible he was telling the truth here as it’s confirmed that he went missing and no one knows what happened to him. Also, Marcus coincidentally knew the name of Sanford’s son.
  • He then uses this story to provoke Sanford into drawing his gun, giving Warren the excuse to shoot and kill the elderly Confederate general in cold blood. Although Sanford most definitely deserved it for his racist actions against African Americans, it’s still premeditated murder.
  • In response to Marco the Mexican lying to him and in response to Marco killing Minnie and Sweet Dave, Warren shoots him but when Marco is already dead or incapacitated, Warren took it way too far and shot Marco in the head with his 2 revolvers which led to Marco’s face exploding, after doing this there’s a subtle smile in Warren’s face.
  • Warren coldly executes Jody Domergue after he surrenders. This act is particularly heinous because it shows Warren's willingness to kill even when there is no immediate threat to his life. He decides to shoot Jody in the head because Jody shot him in the testicles, so this was Warren’s form of revenge.
  • Even though Daisy wanted to kill him, the way he killed her was still extremely brutal as he prevented Chris from shooting her saying that was “Too good for her” he then hangs her alongside Chris, getting sadistic enjoyment out of killing her. Although again she was a criminal it’s still not a justification for premeditated murder.
  • His presumed death isn’t played for sympathy and he doesn’t feel remorse for any of his crimes.

What Prevents him From Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He is tragic as his actions while brutal, are often motivated by a sense of justice and retribution against those who have wronged him, showed xenophobia against him or others. His deep-seated hatred for the Confederacy stems from his own experiences as a former slave and a Union soldier. His violent actions against Confederates and their supporters can be seen as a form of vengeance for the atrocities committed against African Americans during and after the Civil War. Showing that he does care for his people, and that this is the reason he is so racist against White people.
  • He is genuinely affable and has a genuine friendship with Chris Mannix by the end of the film, as after he didn’t go along with Daisy’s order of killing him, and when Chris protected Warren from getting shot by Daisy, Warren says that he may have misjudged him, and just about they’re about to die he fulfills Chris’ final wish of seeing his Abraham Lincoln letter, making this a true friendship.
  • He also genuinely respects John Ruth despite manipulating him with the Abraham Lincoln letter, even honoring him by choosing to hang Daisy alongside Chris, avenging John's death and fulfilling his duty to hang her.
