Wake up to reality! Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world. The longer you live, the more you realize that the only things that truly exist in this reality are merely pain, suffering, and futility. Listen, everywhere you look in this world, wherever there is light, there will always be shadows to be found as well. As long as there is a concept of victors, the vanquished will also exist. The selfish intent of wanting to preserve peace initiates war, and hatred is born in order to protect love. There are nexuses, causal relationships that cannot be separated. I want to sever the fate of this world. A world of only victors. A world of only peace. A world of only love. I will create such a world. I am the Ghost Of The Uchiha.
~ Madara Uchiha

Madara Uchiha is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Obito Uchiha) of the manga and anime series Naruto. He is an infamous member of the Uchiha Clan and the mastermind behind the Eye of the Moon Plan, as it is revealed that he was responsible for turning Obito to a dark path and indirectly lead to the formation of the Akatsuki.

He is also the arch-enemy of the Senju Brothers, Hashirama and Tobirama, with the former being his childhood best friend and the latter being the killer of his little brother, Izuna Uchiha.

In Japanese, he is voiced by Naoya Uchida and Go Inoue as a child. In English, he is voiced by Neil Kaplan and Xander Mobus as a child.

His Evil Ranking

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?

Background

  • During the war against the Senju and Uchiha, Madara adamantly refused to end the conflict, prolonging the war and getting several shinobi killed on both sides.
  • He betrayed the Hidden Leaf Village and attacked it multiple times.
  • He was denounced by other clansmen, in the Uchiha clan, for his violence.
  • He captured Kurama to use against Hashirama, viewing the Tailed Beasts as nothing but slaves to be used by the Uchiha and strengthening Kurama's hatred against humans.
  • No matter how many times Hashirama attempted to reason with Madara and settle things peacefully, Madara always refused to concede and believed that his way was the only correct one.
  • Madara implanted Nagato with the Rinnegan at the age of seven, intending to manipulate Nagato to sacrifice himself using Rinne Rebirth in order to revive him once Madara's natural lifespan came to an end. This would eventually be done under Obito, who manipulated Nagato and dragged him down into darkness in the same way that Madara did with Obito.
  • Despite that he did save Obito's life and patched him up as best he could, it was only done so that Madara would have a pawn to use for his agenda, the Eye of the Moon Plan.
  • Madara manipulated the Hidden Mist Villagers to place the Three-Tails in Rin Nohara. He masterminded a plot to have the Hidden Leaf Village destroyed, but used this moment as a way to set up a scenario where Obito would arrive to see Rin killed by Kakashi.
    • This scene completely destroyed Obito's spirit and turned him to the dark side. From there, Obito would carry out Madara's mission and would commit brutal acts under his name.
    • While never an actual member of the Akatsuki, Madara's influence on Obito indirectly led to the formation of the terrorist organization.
  • Madara implanted cursed seals on Obito's and Rin's hearts to have them follow his plans without them being aware of it. For Rin, it was used to keep her under his control after forcing her to be the jinchuuriki of Isobu. For Obito, he used it to prevent Obito from killing himself if he ever lost interest with carrying out the Eye of the Moon Plan for whatever reason and to force him to stay as his pawn until the completion of his master plan.

Fourth Great Shinobi War

  • When Madara was revived by Kabuto years later, Madara fights the Fourth Division Army of the Shinobi Alliance. After killing many of them by himself, he drops two meteors on the army, killing thousands.
  • When he fights the Allied Shinobi Alliance, he notices that he is facing the Allied Shinobi Forces that comprised of all the Five Great Nations working together. In the past, Madara strived for peace between warring clans and villages with Hashirama. However, when faced with the Allied Shinobi Forces, he chooses to fight and kill as many of them to demonstrate his powers towards them and ignores the fact that they are actually united. He reveals his level of hypocrisy by attacking them when he claimed to Obito that he only wants to bring the world into peace as its messiah.
  • Madara fights the Five Kage and severely beats all of them, continuously mocking them and their abilities before leaving them for dead. In addition, he showed gratification out of seeing the Kage struggle in their battle against him.
  • Before concluding his fight with the kage, he cuts Tsunade in half leaving her alive to slowly die from the severe injury.
  • Madara assists Obito in using the Ten-Tails to kill off members of the Shinobi Alliance. In addition, he assisted Obito in using the Ten-Tails to launch a Tailed Beast Ball at a village destroying it and killing a lot of people. Madara also influenced the Ten-Tails to attack the Allied Shinobi Forces HQ which resulted in the deaths of Inoichi Yamanaka, Shikaku Nara, Mabui and multiple individuals while celebrating his victory afterwards.
  • Madara attempts to use Obito as a pawn to revive himself with the Outer Path - Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique. The act places Obito under intense pain as Madara betrays the latter. After Obito's defeat to the Allied Shinobi Forces, Madara uses Obito a second time to successfully revive himself with the Rinne Rebirth jutsu, preventing Obito from reviving the tens of thousands of people who already died during the war.
  • He demonstrated his egotism including his egotistical motives on more than one occasion during the war:
    • When fighting Hashirama and when Naruto and Sai were attempting to seal Madara when he was in his Impure World Reincarnated form, Madara noted that he wanted to be the only one to do the Infinite Tsukyomi and did not want Obito to do it even though the latter was close to completing the jutsu. In addition, he thanked Naruto for defeating Obito and smugly revealed to him that Naruto saved him the trouble of weakening Obito himself. This shows Madara's egotism by how he prioritized completing the Infinite Tsukyomi on his own and would not want Obito to complete it and intended to harm Obito even though this is the goal that he strived for.
    • When Obito confronts Madara to ask him what he was to him, Madara calls Obito "Madara" and explains that all who strive towards the Infinite Tsukyomi is him which shows that Madara rejected Obito's individuality in place of his own identity. In addition, this reveals a layer of Madara's egotism and lack of trust towards those who work for him by denying them their own identities and imposing his own identity on them to further his own ego.
  • He takes Kakashi's Sharingan eye for himself, leaving Kakashi without his eye, so that he can use the Sharingan to get into the Kamui dimension where Obito was at.
  • Madara mocks Obito over manipulating him the entire time and allowing him to go into the darkness, remarking how he had taught Obito to control others by manipulating the darkness in their hearts and that Obito is presumptuous to believe he's different. Afterwards, he takes his Rinnegan eye out of Obito and transplants it with Kakashi's Sharingan eye, leaving him unconscious so that Black Zetsu can take control of his body.
  • He captures all of the Tailed Beasts, nearly killing Naruto and Killer B in the process.
  • He nearly kills Naruto by extracting Kurama from his body and nearly killed Sasuke by impaling him in his chest with a sword. On both occasions, he left them both for dead.
  • He successfully implements the Infinite Tsukuyomi on the world, which ends up putting all living beings inside a giant tree and placing them in their own dreams, causing them all to live false lives.
    • The God Tree also gradually converts Infinite Tsukuyomi victims into White Zetsu slaves, effectively killing their original selves once the transformation is complete. Although Madara did not know that, his actions would have caused thousands of people and eventually the entire human population to be supplanted in this way.
  • When casting the Infinite Tsukyomi, Madara also used another jutsu called God: Nativity of a World of Trees which involves having the god tree spread its roots across the entire globe to ensnare all living beings to the Infinite Tsukyomi. While most of humanity was being placed in the Infinite Tsukyomi, the roots of the tree began to destroy portions of each of the Five Great Nation villages and other villages and areas across the globe.
  • Despite his noble intentions, Madara revealed his narcissism with his belief that he is the sole savior of mankind and above all other shinobi, and as noted by several people, he wants to be the one who rules the new world he created. While his objective was to bring peace to the Shinobi world and to put a stop to the endless conflicts, Madara is responsible for far more death and conflict than any of the other nations. He started the Fourth Great Ninja War and got thousands killed, and when confronted with these deaths, he shows no remorse whatsoever.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?

Both versions

  • Madara genuinely loved his younger brother, Izuna, and when he died, Madara became bitter and hateful, never truly getting over Izuna's death. When revived, he openly expressed his hatred toward Tobirama for killing him, showing that he continued to love Izuna even decades later.
  • After being used as a vessel by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, Madara's final moments have him accept defeat to Hashirama's ideals being beneficial and conducive to the newer generations and the ninja world as a whole. Although he does not express any remorse for what he did, he was able to have a level of reconciliation with Hashirama, showing he still cared deep down for his old friend.

Anime only

  • When he realized he was a pawn and was about to become Kaguya's vessel, Madara thought: "How did this happen? Hashirama... Where did I go wrong?". Although he pinned down Hashirama in the war, this showed that he looked to his rival for a level of support and wisdom. He also questioned where he went wrong. Even though he felt his plan was right, this moment showed a level of sympathy for Madara.
