Lietuenant Colonel Jack Sullivan is a major antagonist in Season 4 of the Netflix original series Stranger Things.

He is a lieutenant colonel who seeks to find and neutralize Eleven, considering her powers dangerous and assuming her to be killing teenagers in Hawkins, unaware that the one behind such a killing spree is Vecna. Throughout his search, Sullivan resorts to different methods, even sending his men to try to kill Eleven's friends or savagely torturing a fellow government official into giving him the information he craves.

He is portrayed by Sherman Augustus.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Raids the house of Dr. Sam Owens in the middle of the night due to his suspicions that Owens and Eleven have been killing teenagers in Hawkins, Indiana so the former can sell the latter to the Russians, firmly denying Owens' explanation that the killer couldn't be Eleven (in reality, the one responsible for the killings was the mindl flayer).
  • Sends his soldiers to the Byers residence in Lenora, California upon discovering Eleven's location, leading his men to try to kill Eleven's adoptive brothers and boyfriend, which caused the unnecessary deaths of several of his own soldiers as well as Agent Harmon, who gave up his life to save the kids.
  • Captures Agent Wallace, the sole survivor of the Byers residence raid, and savagely tortures him for days to force him into revealing Eleven's location, and while he doesn't get killed, he was tortured to the point where he was traumatized enough to prevent him from answering basic questions.
  • Upon finding out where Eleven and Owens are hiding, he attacks the NINA facility and has most of the scientists and security there killed, and that's excluding the casualties on his side.
  • Orders his helicopter to shoot Brenner and Eleven as they escaped in the desert despite Owens warning him that it wasn't Eleven that was responsible for the murders in Hawkins, leading his men to kill Brenner and nearly kill Eleven as well.
  • He is a hypocrite, since he chews out Dr. Martin Brenner for carrying out inhumane experiments and actions, even though he has no problems in treating his prisoners no better than how Brenner treated his test subjects and is willing to hurt kids.
  • While he seems to show an understanding side when Agent Wallace pleads with him to not kill Eleven, given how he orders his helicopter to kill her due to Eleven escaping from the base and hurting his men, this redeeming quality is completely subverted.
  • Despite the The Mind Flayer, Vecna, Warden Melnikov and Brenner doing far more heinous deeds than him, Sullivan has fewer resources and the savage torture he inflicts on Agent Wallace and his very sizeable kill count is unique enough to allow him to pass the show's heinous standards.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite the ruthless methods he is willing to adopt, Sullivan does seem to genuinely believe that his actions will protect and save the United States of America from supernatural threats, making him somewhat of a well-intentioned extremist.
    • Even with all of the hypocritical methods Sullivan would use, nothing indicates any trace of selfishness in his part. However, given how he is willing to endanger fellow Americans in his quest to neutralize Eleven, his apparent extremism is mixed in too thickly with his egotism, bias and hypocrisy.

Trivia[]

  • While Lt. Colonel Sullivan is currently Near Pure Evil, there's a very small possibility that this may change once the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is released, as he is set to return.
  • It's theorized that Lt. Colonel Sullivan may have killed Dr. Sam Owens before leaving the NINA facility where Eleven was being held and from which she escaped from, as Owens is last seen calling Sullivan out for ordering his men to shoot at Eleven and Martin Brenner and by the time Sullivan comes out from the compound, Owens is nowhere to be seen. If this were confirmed in the fifth season, it would make Sullivan even worse.
  • Lt. Colonel Sullivan is so far the only Stranger Things villain to be Near Pure Evil.
