~ Loptous' final words after his defeat, spoken via a dying Julius. |
Loptous, also known as the Dark God, is the overarching antagonist of the Jugdral duology within the Fire Emblem franchise.
He is the overarching antagonist of the 1996 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Manfroy) in its 1999 interquel, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.
Loptous is a dragon from the continent of Archanea, belonging to the Earth Dragon tribe like Medeus. He is the founder of the long lost Loptrian Empire and the deity worshipped by Loptr Church members, a cult of which he served as its founder as well. He is also Naga's archenemy.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- During the war between Divine Dragons and Degenerated Dragons, with the declining Earth Dragons were fated to meet their defeat, Loptous encountered a human from Jugdral, named Galle. Galle requested a blood pact with Loptous to gain true power of dragons, to which Loptous agreed to make in order to unleash his hatred to humanity. During the pact, Loptous consealed his will and power into a tome named after himself.
- Then, Loptous arrived in Jugdral and established the Loptr Church, before building the tyrannical Loptrian Empire and became its de facto first emperor. He then started his bloodsheding rule, causing deaths of countless people and even children during a cruel ritual known as the Child Hunt.
- Loptous continued his reign by possessing Galle's descendants for another seventeen generations, crushing down resistance against his tyranny.
- After his revival through possessing Julius, Loptous planned to purge Naga's descendants, so he planned to kill off Julia. However, Deidre sacrificed herself to protect her daughter. Manfroy convinced Loptous to keep Julia alive for further purpose.
- Under Loptous' possession, Julius gradually degenerated into a cruel and power-hungry tyrant, who had taken control from his father and orchestrated the new row of Child Hunt.
- Loptous, just like Medeus and Grima, was driven by a hatred towards humanity and was starting a tyranny to unleash his wrath as well as hatred to humans. Unlike most of his clan members, Loptous was never degenerated and thus had a clear sanity, and he had no tragic quality of Medeus, either.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Loptous' direct actions are mostly described in the past and were left off-screen.
- Whilst he had heavy influence in the present day of Jugdral, it is debatable how much Loptous having control over Julius. As it was shown in both Genealogy and Thracia 776, Julius had a large part of his free will retained during the orchestration of the Child Hunt. Even after becoming Loptous' host, Julius still showed protective nature to Ishtar and had his personal grudge with Reinhardt, something that Loptous will never show as he equally hated all human beings.
- As a result, even if being the latest Child Hunt's mastermind and Julius' corrupting factor, Loptous actually remained more passive for the most part of Generation 2 story. He does not do directly involve himself into actions and is less active in comparison to his associates like Julius himself, Bloom and Dannan, not to mention Manfroy & Hilda.
- He failed to Grima in terms of in-series Heinous Standards. Grima has a bit lower resources than Loptous due to being an artificial dragon, but after becoming sapient and turning resentful to humanity, Grima intended to destroy the whole world and entirely exterminate humanity (which even succeeded in the alternate timeline, leaving Lucina as its sole survivor whereas the rest of the world was either exterminated, turned into zombies or brainwashed like the case of Morgan).
Trivia[]
- As his vessel Julius has more sympathetic and redeeming qualities, Loptous is the only Final Boss in Fire Emblem series to be Near Pure Evil.
- He is also the only dragon in Fire Emblem series to be Near Pure Evil.
- He is the only Fire Emblem NPE thus far that is not explicitly Hate Sink, in spite of his tyranny and cruelty. He was included in Medeus Archetype (that was meant to be threatening, not to be loathed) and remained mostly inactive in comparison to his followers and allies, only manipulating things from behind.
