Near Pure Evil Wiki

It is the strict policy of Ba Sing Se that the war not be mentioned within the walls. Constant news of an escalating war will throw the citizens of Ba Sing Se into a state of panic. Our economy would be ruined, our peaceful way of life – our traditions – would disappear. In silencing talk of conflict, Ba Sing Se remains a peaceful, orderly utopia – the last one on Earth.
~ Long Feng.

Long Feng is the secondary antagonist of Book 2: Earth of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

He was the leader of the Dai Li and Grand Secretariat of Ba Sing Se who once did whatever he could to prevent the people of the city (especially the king) from learning of the war going on, trying ensure the city remained a "utopia." After being exposed, Long Feng makes a deal with Azula to overthrow the Earth King in order to retain his power.

He was voiced by Clancy Brown, who also played Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, Uka Uka in the Crash Bandicoot video games, President Luthor in Justice League, Mr. Freeze in The Batman, Yakone in The Legend of Korra and Gunmar in Tales of Arcadia.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • As his adviser, he would manipulate the Earth King through his lies, claiming there was no actual war going on.
  • He tyrannically ruled Ba Sing Se with his power through the Earth King and the Dai Li, silencing anyone who spoke about the war going on either by brainwashing them or imprisoning them under Lake Laogai.
  • He brainwashed dozens of women across Ba Sing Se in order to have them ensure that the war was entirely unspoken of.
  • When he is told about the upcoming eclipse that could give the Earth Kingdom an advantage to defeat the Fire Nation, Long Feng completely brushes it off as mention of the war was against the law and threatens to kick Aang and his allies out of the city.
  • He captures Appa to prevent Aang from finding him.
  • He tries to have Aang and his friends captured once again after they enter Lake Laogai to find Appa.
  • He brainwashes Jet and forces him to attack Aang, wanting him dead.
  • He attacks Jet with his Earthbending, severely injuring him and resulting in his death.
  • He makes a deal with Azula to help him overthrow the Earth King in order to regain control over Ba Sing Se.
  • He has the Dai Li capture all of the Earth generals and the king himself, overthrowing him.
  • Despite making a deal with her to help him, he immediately attempts to betray Azula after regaining control over Ba Sing Se, ordering the Dai Li to arrest her.
  • Due to his actions, he is partially responsible for Ba Sing Se falling into the Fire Nation's iron fist and leading to the fall of the Earth Kingdom.
  • While he claims to be an extremist, he truthfully is anything but that. Long Feng's actions only left Ba Sing Se vulnerable to invasion and he would use the war as an excuse to rule Ba Sing Se tyrannically, being fine with brainwashing and killing people to enforce his rule. Even if Feng was actually well-intended, he almost certainly would have lost this after selling out the Earth Kingdom to the Fire Nation.
  • Though he did admit defeat to Azula, bowing and accepting that she had beaten him at his own game, this was likely just him appeasing to her for his own safety as opposed to showing any genuine respect considering his reluctance to do so.
  • He lacks redeeming qualities, detracting comedic moments, and is taken completely seriously by the narrative.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He ultimately fails the Heinous Standards to other villains in the series who did worse than him with lesser resources like Jet who nearly wiped out an entire village by causing a flood, and Hama who tortured countless Fire Nation Citizens. However, considering that Long Feng stands out for his mass brainwashing and being indirectly responsible for the fall of the Earth Kingdom, this is a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • Alongside Hama, Long Feng is one of the two Near Pure Evils in the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series to not be part of the Fire Nation.
  • Long Feng's voice actor, Clancy Brown, has also voiced Yakone from the sequel series The Legend of Korra, another NPE.
