Liam Ryan and Julie Ryan are the main antagonists of the Law and Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Merchandise". The two are slavers who with their farm, use several kids as slaves to do labor, also punishing them by torturing, raping, and pimping them out.

Liam was portrayed by Tim Buchanan and Julie was portrayed by Jennifer Lamb in uncredited roles.

Their Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Them Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • After losing their farm, they started kidnapping several children and immigrants, all being abused, tortured, raped, and sometimes murdered to their liking.
  • Being caught by a neighbor, they killed the rest of their 5 slaves by fatally poisoning them with cyanide-laced grape juice
  • Arriving in Wyandanch, New York, they start back their slave trade and buy the siblings, Carly and Micah Holbart, from Victoria Reyes, as well as 10 out of the 7 of their slaves being bought from Reyes.
  • Their actions lead Micah to kill his sister out of fear that he would be brutally tortured by the Ryans if he helped her escape.
  • After Micah was arrested by a police officer for prostitution and subsequently released, he began prostituting himself. When Benson ripped his shirt, it revealed marks on his body that looked like he had been skinned.
    • While talking to the police, it was said that he and his friends would be abused for doing their jobs wrong and that 3 babies were born from the rape and brought to a random place, possibly sold on the black market or to pedophiles.
    • Its mentioned by Micah that while he was in the slavery, there was ten children, but then it became 7 because some of the slaves we’re murdered, and then became six when he killed his sister
  • Just like they did before, they chained the rest of the slaves to a wall and poisoned them again with grape juice, but this time they survived.
  • Being arrested, the police realized that there were even more children than the 5 ones that were poisoned, implying several other victims
  • Despite not being characterized that much, they still have clear motives, goals, sadism, and intelligence, which stops them from being too enigmatic.
  • Despite not all of their victims being shown, the effects are still clearly displayed on the dead body of Carly, the abuse on Micah, and how the 5 slaves acted while poisoned, which backs up how badly the rest of the children were hurt.
  • They are not shown to have any true love for each other and their relationship seems to be one out of mutual sadism.
  • While Liam Ryan is the actual one to pimp out Micah, Julie still plays just as big of role as she may be less imposing or she simply looks at the kids while Liam goes out pumping, meaning they are both as heinous.
  • They easily pass the heinous standard of Law & Order due to their victim count of 20 and incredibly depraved abuse and rapes of numerous children, which they all kept as slaves and/or murdered, and because they have no resources except each other.

What Prevents Them From Being Pure Evil?[]

  • They suffer from insufficient characterization as they have no lines and hardly appear in the episode.
