Leigh Emerson is a major antagonist from American Horror Story: Asylum. He is a serial killer.

He was portrayed by Ian McShane.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He murdered a street Santa and went on a killing spree killing 18 different people from five homes, children included. This makes for a total of 19 murders in a single night.
  • He attacked and bit a staff member of Briarcliff during a photo shoot.
  • He attacked and nearly killed Frank.
  • He beats and tortures Sister Jude with canes and tries to rape and kill her. While he has a legitimate (albeit myopic) reason to hate her since she beat him with canes and allowed his sores to become infected due to never giving him medical treatment, beating and attempted rape and murder were still very brutal.
  • After Jude stabs him in the neck in an act of self defense and he survives, he, Arden, and the Devil all lie that she attacked him for no reason, resulting in her being imprisoned in Briarcliff and subjected to horrible "treatments".
  • He pretends to want to atone for his crimes, but after Monsignor Howard baptizes him, Emerson attacks him, nails him to a cross, and leaves him to die as he escapes Briarcliff.
  • It's mentioned that due to his experience with Jude, he developed a hatred for nuns and killed seven of them after escaping Briarcliff and starting a new killing spree.
  • While he does have some funny moments, most of them are brief and he is taken seriously by the narrative.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He fails the high Heinous Standards of the series, as rape, mass murder and child murder are all common. The same season has the Devil and the original Bloody Face, who both perform much more on screen villainy than him, with the latter becoming more heinous even with lesser kill count.
  • He has a horribly tragic past as ultimately what motivated him was that he was raped by five men after being arrested on Christmas Eve, which made him unable to enjoy the holiday.
