We shall see how brave you are when nailed to the walls of Hoover Dam, your body facing west so you may watch your world die.
~ Lanius showing an example of his brutality.

Legate Lanius is the secondary antagonist in the 2010 Role Playing Game Fallout New Vegas. He is a bloodthirsty and ruthless warrior who is in the Legion for two reasons. For his loyalty towards Caesar, and for the opportunity to kill many people. At the end of the game if The Courier sides against The Legion Lanius can be talked down and will grow to respect The Courier and retreat but they will meet in another battle on another day.

He was voiced by Mitch Lewis.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Before he joined The Legion, he already had a reputation as a man who could kill entire Legionary groups single handedly purely for his bloodlust.
  • When ambushed by The Legion, his captain showed cowardice which caused him to go into a frenzy, killing 15 of his men before being subdued and after being rescued by Caesar, his first thought was that he would join Caesar's legion if he could kill his previous tribe members which Caesar agreed to as long as he spared the easily manipulated boys.
  • He is equally complicit in Caesar's end goal to ultimately take over the entire Mojave Wasteland and run it in his own brutal totalitarian rule that involves rapes, labour, gladiator fights to the death and crucifixions.
  • He caused many of his slaves to become blind just because he wanted to keep the myth of him having a torn off face alive.
  • Mentally broke the Hangdogs by burning all their hounds alive in front of them. The males were only spared due to Caesar wanting to keep them alive due to their skills with taming dogs otherwise Lanius probably would have killed them.
  • He murdered 5 tribes to satisfy his bloodlust, and captured 14 for Caesar's Legion, where they are either enslaved or forced to join The Legion.
  • He shows no care for his own men while in battle regardless if they die or survive, only caring about being victorious over his opponents and will do anything to get it.
  • Caesar ordered him to strike fear into underperforming Legates and Centurions, so Lanius came up with a ritual that involved every tenth member of the Legionary unit that performed poorly would be beaten to death under Lanius's orders. He also killed the officer in front of his men to further motivate them. This ritual was seen as terrifying by many people and has been broadcasted by Radio New Vegas and shared across the Mojave.
  • Lanius also sees war as a tool to rid the world of weak human beings and to keep the strong ones to realise their true potential, showing how cold he is towards others simply for lacking the strength that others possess.
  • If Lanius becomes the leader due to Caesar dying he will commit unspeakable acts such as:
    • Crucifying Arcade Gannon for being a member of The Followers of the Apocalypse, which is portrayed as a fate worse then death.
    • Commit mass murder upon arriving at the strip of New Vegas.
    • Crucify Chief Hanlon out of spite.
    • Kill all members of The Followers of the Apocalypse rather then give them safe passage out of the Mojave.
  • Kills one of Dale Barton's Brahmin just because it got in his way.
  • Caesar himself says that Lanius is only in The Legion for the opportunity to kill people.
  • When Joshua Graham was "killed" by Caesar by being burnt alive, Lanius said that Graham deserved his fate.
  • Before battle of Hoover Dam he gruesomely tortured to death several NCR soldiers captured by Legion, with him even beheading last of them in front of the Courier when he entered his tent before the battle, if he decided to assist Legion.
  • If The Courier sides against him during The Battle of Hoover Dam, he tells the Courier he will crucify them, and have them facing towards all the destruction so the Courier can watch the world they live in die.
  • If he takes control of Hoover Dam, it is strongly implied he to was going to commit genocide against the New California Republic after he was finished.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He is extremely loyal to Caesar as though he was reluctant to go on the campaign to the west as he considered it a trap, he decided to go on it anyway out of respect for Caesar and would return to further refine The Legion if he was defeated. He also joined Caesar's legion after Caesar gave him his request and respected him for saving his life. And he also accepted Caesar using the Omertas uprising to help with The Legion winning despite not agreeing with the method entirely. Finally he wants to take over Hoover Dam for Caesar's sake rather then the entirety of The Legion. All of these reasons prove Lanius is not a fanaticist.
  • He has some honour, as he sees the NCR as passable foes who are excellent at ranged combat and saw Chief Hanlon as a worthy opponent even if he crucified him out of disrespect. And he sees The Courier as a worthy opponent and obviously holds respect for them if they convince Lanius to retreat, telling them its unfortunate that Vulpes was not present to hear their wisdom. And despite preferring brute force above other methods, he does not hate others who prefer to use words rather then strength of arms.
