Lance is a secondary antagonist of the Gone series books Hunger, Lies and Plague, acting as the second-in-command of the hate group, the Human Crew. He joined the group in its formation after Zil Sperry blamed Hunter Leftkowitz for the death of his roommate, Harry, after Hunter accidently used his powers against him in self-defense against Zil.

Despite never taking full control of the Human Crew, he played a vital role in their crimes and was actively a negative influence on its leaders, both when Zil was in charge and when Turk took over. By the time of Plague, he was pretty much pulling the strings and telling Turk everything to do.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Although he does his best to hide it, he's a very sadistic person who enjoys hurting people.
  • While he sometimes acts nice towards his fellow Human Crew members, this is faux affability as there are multiple occasions showing he has no care for any of them. This includes his lack of a reaction towards the deaths of Hank and Antoine; the fact that he was unfazed when his former leader, Zil, was killed by Dekka Talent; and how he attempted to put all the blame on Turk for murdering Albert Hillsborough.
  • He is consistently a corrupting influence on both Zil and Turk during their times as leaders, especially towards Turk whom he usually convinces to commit worse actions than what was originally intended.
  • Unlike the rest of the Human Crew members who appear to be somewhat acting out of fear of the mutated children going against them, Lance is in the Human Crew because he's just a xenophobic person overall, as shown by how he is openly racist toward Dekka and Albert.
    • His lack of principles are proven when he considered joining Drake Merwin, a character who actually had powers himself.
  • He is unique amongst the Human Crew as he has no redeeming qualities or tragedy about his character, growing up as a popular and seemingly happy child.

Hunger[]

  • He took part in the Human Crew's search for Hunter, which led to the brutal interrogation of Duck Zhang.
  • He lured Hunter out so the Human Crew could beat him up which caused him to have permanent brain damage.
  • While he was seemingly aversive to the idea of lynching Hunter, this wasn't out of any humanity as it's made clear from his justifications that he was just scared by how Sam Temple would react to such a crime. He had no problem taking part in the attempted hanging when a consensus was reached, and he committed far worse crimes without hesitation later on.
  • He was amongst the firing squad that shot at Duck Zhang when he stumbled on their execution of Hunter.

Lies[]

  • He was involved in Zil's plan to eliminate all children with powers in the FAYZ.
  • He helped in the shootout involving 4 of Edilio Escobar's guards during a gas station robbery.
  • He, along with the rest of the Human Crew, set a fire in Perdido which likely killed dozens of people and was confirmed to have destroyed many houses and left several people wounded.
  • He took the job of "spreading the truth" which was to lie and blame the Perdido Beach fire on Caine when the Human Crew realized their plan would fail.
  • He, Zil, and Turk attacked a group of children running away in a commotion caused by Nerezza, in which he slashed at children using a plank of wood with a nail through it, not caring if they had powers or not. One child was killed in this by Lance knocking him down a hill and giving Turk a clear shot.

Plague[]

  • Upon hearing of Drake Merwin's escape from imprisonment, he convinced Turk to get revenge on Albert for their somewhat tame punishment of having to dig trenches.
  • He got Turk to shoot Albert in the head (which he miraculously survived) when Turk initially only wanted to humiliate him.
  • He tried to kidnap the 4-year-old, Little Pete, to abuse his ability to create water, and possibly food.
    • To make matters worse, he intended to do so by starving and dehydrating Little Pete, basically placing him in an extremely cruel form of slavery.
  • He got into a Mexican standoff with Edilio, aiming his gun at Little Pete to use him as a hostage.
  • His death of being betrayed and publicly executed by Caine Soren was not played for sympathy and was well-deserved.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite being the most irredeemable member of the Human Crew, his actions in Hunger and Lies can generally be attributed to all members working under Zil Sperry. Although the same can’t be said for his role in Plague due to him being the brains of Turk’s operation, it still isn’t enough for him to meet the Heinous Standards of the Gone series compared to Zil Sperry himself, who led the Human Crew in starting the Perdido Beach fire, and Mary Terrafino, who tried to kill the preschoolers she was taking care of in a murder-suicide. Both had similar resources in that they had no powers.

Trivia[]

  • Lance is, alongside Penny and Zil Sperry, one of the three characters from the Gone series to be Near Pure Evil.
  • Like the rest of the Human Crew, Lance is based off a member of Germany's Nazi Party. The person he represents is Albert Speer, a handsome and intelligent architect in Hitler’s inner circle.
