~ Higuchi when Hatori wanted to leave the Yotsuba group. |
Kyosuke Higuchi, more often just simply referred to as Higuchi, is the main antagonist of the Yotsuba Arc of the anime/manga series Death Note.
He is a high-ranking member of the Yotsuba Group and also the head of the Technology Development Department at Yotsuba. Later on, Higuchi became the Third Kira after he received the Death Note from Rem; however, unlike Light Yagami, he mainly used the Death Note to kill businessmen and executives from other companies in order to make Yotsuba more powerful and wealthy.
In the anime, he was voiced by Issei Futamata (二又一成) in the Japanese version and by Andrew Kavadas in the English dub. In the drama series, he was portrayed by Shuji Kashiwabara.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He mercilessly killed at least hundreds of people using the Death Note.
- Unlike Light (at least at first), Higuchi has no good intentions whatsoever, as he only killed criminals because Rem told him to and to avoid suspicion. While doing this, he didn't even remotely bother to check if they redeemed themselves, committed crimes without malice or had extenuating circumstances (such as car accidents or killing someone who deserved to die). Even when Rem told him he could stop after Misa's release, Higuchi stated he would continue to kill criminals because it's good for business.
- Not only that, but while Light genuinely targeted criminals most of the time, Higuchi kills just about anyone he wants to, i.e. competing business rivals.
- Compared to the other villains in the series, Higuchi killed more completely innocent people, since his main targets were a bunch of innocent business rivals, being responsible for at least thirteen known deaths, and he could be responsible for more. He only killed them for power and wealth, and nothing else.
- When Matsuda, disguised as Misa's manager, caught listening a Yotsuba group meeting, he told the other members they should kill him and even after he seemingly fell to his death by accident, he still wrote Matsuda's (fake) name in the Death Note to make sure he is dead.
- He even goes as far as killing his own partner Hatori just because he wanted to leave, showing that he has no care for his fellow Yotsuba group members.
- While he did want to make Misa his wife, it is obvious he doesn't actually have any care for her. He only wanted her for her Shinigami Eyes so he could kill anyone who stood in his way, and he seemed to lust for her more than anything else.
- He also had perverted moments with women, including Misa and he wanted to sexually harass her in his car showing how disgusting he is.
- When it seemed that his identity as the Third Kira would be revealed on live television by Matsuda, he did anything he could to kill him to prevent that from happening, trying to learn Matsuda's real name so he could kill him with the Death Note and even gaining the Shinigami Eyes just so he could see his name and likely the others as well to kill the ones who stood in his way.
- He planned to kill Misa, Mogi, and the Yoshida Productions president to eliminate any witnesses, only holding off on this because killing Matsuda was more important.
- He mercilessly manipulated then tried to shoot Wedy with a gun when she caught him as Kira. However she is thankfully saved by Soichiro Yagami.
- After he was pulled over while heading to the Sakura TV studio, he brutally killed a police officer who was standing in his way by crashing his motorcycle into the back of a truck.
- He has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and is intended to be loathed by the audience.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- As horrible as he is, he fails the in-story Heinous Standard to Light, as he was ultimately just a pawn in Light's plan and didn't do anything that Light couldn't reasonably foresee him doing. Furthermore Light has worse moments of personal cruelty such as driving Naomi and Takada to suicide with the Death Note.
- He fails the individual capability too, as he has much more resources than Light: Light is a student, while Higuchi is a wealthy businessman who holds a high position in Yotsuba, and is able to use his wealth to corrupt the government in order to prevent the police from investigating the Kira case, and even used an astonishing amount of money to hire the detective Eraldo Coil to deal with L.
