~ The Knave of Hearts to the Mad Hatter and his friends while disrupting their tea party.

Ilosovic Stayne, also known as the Knave of Hearts, is the secondary antagonist of the 2010 dark fantasy film Alice in Wonderland and a posthumous character in its 2016 sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass.

He is the right-hand of the Red Queen. Although feigning loyalty to her, however, the Knave is actually even more malevolent than the mad tyrant and plays upon her insecurities in order to skillfully manipulate her into doing what he wants. He is taken from the traditional English nursery rhyme, The Queen of Hearts, and is based on the Jack of Hearts playing card as well as the late Niccolò Machiavelli.

He was portrayed by Crispin Glover.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Upon finding the Oraculum, he brings it to the Red Queen, showing her what will happen on Frabjous Day (Alice slaying the Jabberwocky), resulting in the queen trying to capture her.
  • To assist in trying to capture Alice, he releases Bayard the hound, ordering him to find her using his sniffing skills, promising to release him and his family from prison if he complies, which is a promise he clearly did not intend to keep as shown by the exchange between him and his horse after Bayard went off to search.
  • He interrogates the Hatter on the whereabouts of Alice and while doing so, he threatens to have them beheaded if they are hiding her.
  • He did nothing to stop the Jabberwocky from massacring Wonderland's citizens and razing houses for the Red Queen despite being able to and after it was done, he took the Vorpal sword so that no one would be able to kill the Red Queen, which was all done so that she could seize control over Wonderland.
  • He preys on the Red Queen's insecurities to manipulate her, telling her that he cannot fathom how Wonderland adores her sister the White Queen instead of her and that she is far superior in all ways and convincing her that it's better to be feared than loved.
    • This would play its role in one of the Red Queen's later actions within the film where she unleashes the Jubjub Bird and endangers the citizens of Wonderland who were in her court while she was trying to execute the Mad Hatter, with the Red Queen telling the Knave that he was right in that it is better to be feared than loved, Knave being apathetic about the situation when she says this.
  • He creeps up on Alice (known by them as Um at the time) and pins her against the wall, telling her he likes largeness, essentially sexually harassing her and also showing himself to be unfaithful towards the Red Queen, with whom he was pretending to be in a romance with.
  • When the Red Queen confronts him for attempting to cheat on her with "Um", the Knave incriminates "Um" by telling the Red Queen that she forced herself on him and is obsessed with him in spite of him telling her his heart belongs to her, resulting in the Red Queen ordering "Um" to be beheaded, with the Knave attempting to arrest her for "unlawful seduction."
  • When the Mad Hatter interferes, the Knave engages in a sword duel against him, likely to kill him.
  • Upon finding out that "Um" is Alice due to her name accidentally being revealed by Mallymkum, he continues pursuing her and taunts her when getting her surrounded by the card soldiers, telling her that the queen will take great pleasure in taking off her head before the Bandersnatch comes in and rescues her.
  • After the Queen gets mad at him for letting Alice get away on the Bandersnatch with the Vorpal sword, he informs her of her conspirators whom they've captured, the Hatter and the Dormouse, leading to the Red Queen ordering for them to be beheaded, though the execution would be stopped by the Cheshire Cat rescuing them.
  • On the Red Queen's orders, he prepares the Jabberwocky for battle against the White Queen and those supporting her.
  • When the Hatter interferes in the battle between the Jabberwocky and Alice by stabbing the former in the tail, on the Red Queen's orders, he leads the soldiers against him to behead him, leading in a battle against the White Queen's army and the Red Queen's army, with the Knave himself directly fighting against the Hatter.
  • After the White Queen chains him to the Red Queen to banish him along with her as punishment for assisting her in her crimes, the Knave betrays and attempts to kill the Red Queen with his knife only for this to be foiled by the Hatter, who disarms him before he is taken away with her while begging to be killed instead.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He fails the Heinous Standard to the Red Queen and the Jabberwocky due to a majority of his actions being done under the former's orders with the few independent deeds he has not being quite enough to help him stand out from her.

Trivia[]

  • He was originally Pure Evil, but was rejected due to failing the heinous standards to the Red Queen, while the Jabberwocky turned Pure Evil instead.
