NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of King Piccolo from the mainstream series. The DBE version is actually Pure Evil. |

~ King Piccolo preparing to fight Tien |
Demon King Piccolo is the main antagonist of the original Dragon Ball anime series. He is the unseen overarching antagonist of Tenshinhan saga, the main antagonist of King Piccolo saga, and the posthumous overarching antagonist of the Piccolo Jr. saga.
He is the evil half of Kami, the father/creator of the Ukulele, Piano, Cymbal, Tambourine, Drum, and Piccolo Jr., the archenemy of Master Roshi and the tertiary archenemy of Goku.
He is voiced by the late Takeshi Aono in Japanese, Scott McNeil in the Ocean English dub, Christopher Sabat in the FUNimation English dub, and Mike Shepherd in the Blue Water English dub.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- After being reincarnated for the first time, he unleashed a reign of terror on Earth, creating several demons to assist him in destroying cities and slaughtering a majority of the human population.
- He tortured Mutaito with a barrage of energy blasts, humiliating him and leaving him for dead.
- The shame of this defeat would cause Mutaito to leave on a journey alone, and seeing his master defeated would cause Crane to become cynical and jaded, turning him into a ruthless master who believed power was most important and would later raise his students Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu into the villains they started as.
- The souls of the people he and his offspring killed were forced into an eternal state of Limbo and cannot move on to Other World.
- Created and ordered Tambourine to kill all the martial artists so that they couldn't seal him again, making him directly responsible for the deaths of Krillin, Bacterian, Nam, and King Chappa.
- What makes this worse is that in the Namek saga, because of Krillin's first death at the hands of Tambourine, Goku went into a massive rage as a Super Saiyan and nearly died on an exploding Planet Namek because it appeared as if Krillin could not be revived by the Dragon Balls a second time due to his death at the hands of Frieza.
- In the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie, this also gave Frieza the idea to bring out Broly's Legendary Super Saiyan form by killing his father Paragus, which in the end would've led to Broly's death at the hands of Gogeta had Cheelai and Lemo not used the Dragon Balls to save him.
- Nearly killed Goku during their first fight.
- Caused Master Roshi to sacrifice his life by sealing him away with the Evil Containment Wave.
- Killed Chiaotzu so that the latter couldn't stop him.
- Killed Shenron after gaining eternal youth, so that no one can undo his rule over the world.
- After gaining his youth back, he betrayed and nearly killed the Pilaf Gang by throwing them off their plane despite them having released him after 300 years just to prove a point (although to be fair, the Pilaf Gang were just using King Piccolo for power and most likely planned on doing the same).
- Killed many of King Furry's guards to take over the world.
- Destroyed half of Earth's capital city to terrorize Furry into surrendering.
- Once he took over the world, he made crime legal, declaring Earth to be a criminal paradise. He then ordered the resale of the world's worst criminals to go free.
- Announced his intent to destroy West City and would have gone through with it hadn't Goku intervened during the eleventh hour.
- During the same announcement, he decided to destroy a populated city every year for kicks until the time came when the world was reduced to ashes.
- Took Tien as a hostage when Goku gained the upper hand and brutally tortured him after taking away his fighting spirit.
- When dying, he commanded his last offspring to avenge him in the future, which Piccolo Jr. nearly did by torturing and almost killing Goku in front of all of his friends 3 years later during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament.
- Piccolo would go on to kill Goku and his brother Raditz during the Raditz saga, but it was self-sacrificing on Goku's part.
- It's also implied that the gruesome beating Piccolo gave Goku left his wife Chi-Chi with severe PTSD, which would explain why she became the annoyingly overprotective and nagging mother she is to her sons Gohan and Goten since Dragon Ball Z, as she most likely didn't want them to suffer the same fate Piccolo subjected Goku to that day.
- Although he is the evil half of the Original Nameless Namek, he does not lack moral agency since his son/reincarnation Piccolo was able to redeem himself by saving Gohan from Nappa and Vegeta in the Saiyan saga and become noble and heroic, meaning that King Piccolo could have done the same but openly chose not to.
- Despite the high heinous standards of Dragon Ball, King Piccolo stands out due to his fair lack of resources, as well as having personal villainy towards Goku and Roshi and attempting to destroy the world with a massive kill count, while placing his victims into Fates Worse Than Death.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He showed some care for his children as he never abused or got angry with them, gave Piccolo Jr. genuine words of encouragement upon his birth, and was shocked and angered when Goku and Yajirobe killed off his other offspring one by one. However, even this redeeming quality remains slightly controversial, as he shows no sadness when Goku kills Drum.
Trivia[]
- King Piccolo is the only villain to kill Shenron (without killing the Namekian linked to the Dragon Balls).
- Ironically, while King Piccolo is Near Pure Evil, his son/reincarnation Piccolo Jr. eventually became Near Pure Good.
