~ King K. Rool at the beginning of Donkey Kong 64. |
King K. Rool (who has gone by many aliases) is the main antagonist of the Donkey Kong franchise.
He is the malevolent king of the Kremlings, the master of the Kremling Krew, and the arch-nemesis of the DK Clan (mostly to Donkey and Diddy Kong).
On many occasions, he has stolen the DK Clan's banana hoard for unknown reasons and has kidnapped Donkey and Diddy. He has had many aliases throughout the series, from being a king, to being a pirate, to being a mad scientist and more, all with their own sets of names.
In Donkey Kong 64, K. Rool was voiced by Chris Sutherland. In later games since then, he is voiced by Toshihide Tsuchiya, who also voices Funky Kong in the series.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He stole the DK Clan's Banana Hoard, Leigh Loveday suggested this could be too starve Donkey Kong so as to steal his treehouse, though other writers (including K. Rool's creator) and games like Donkey Kong Country 2 say K. Rool wants to eat the bananas and that the Kongs have other food sources besides the Banana hoard.
- His cruel remark about the Kongs’ favorite food also seems to infer that he targeted Planet Plantaen first to hit them and Xananab where it hurts the most.
- He has kidnapped members of the DK Clan on multiple occasions.
- The Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country has an additional scene where K. Rool, after being defeated, forces all of the Kongs off of his ship and escapes from them by threatening to blow up Donkey Kong Island.
- Captured Donkey Kong and attempted to blackmail the rest of the Kong’s into giving him their banana hoard in exchange for Donkey Kong’s freedom.
- During the time he had Donkey Kong captured, King K. Rool tortured him with his Blunderbuss in front of Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong.
- He used Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong as live batteries to power KAOS.
- He took over the Northern Kremisphere through KAOS, which he used as a puppet leader.
- He imprisoned the Banana Bird Queen and all of her children.
- He polluted and plundered the environment, including with massive destructive factories like Kremkroc Industries Inc. and Mekanos.
- He tried to use the Blast-O-Matic to blow up Donkey Kong Island, even risking himself and his minions in the process just to destroy the DK Clan.
- While there is a secret 100% ending where he is kind to Donkey Kong behind the scenes and breaks the fourth wall, this is non-canon and was solely thrown in for a simple surprise for the player to laugh at.
- He imprisoned his own younger brother, K. Lumsy, for refusing to harm the Kongs. Furthermore, he went to harsh extremes to ensure that K. Lumsy remained imprisoned, giving seven of the eight keys to unlock his jail to his most powerful minions (the bosses in DK64) while keeping the final key in his lair. K. Lumsy was also imprisoned in a rather small jail cell considering his large size, making the imprisonment even crueler.
- He is very cruel to his henchmen. Examples include:
- Forcing his workers to finish repairing the Blast-O-Matic without breaks under threat from his Klaptrap guards.
- He fires Snide the Weasel out of paranoia that he would betray him, which actually works against him since Snide helps the Kongs in revenge.
- Sending a giant Klaptrap to punish a minion for losing the Blast-O-Matic blueprints with an implied off-screen death.
- It is also suggested to be part of the reason why Klubba betrays K. Rool in Donkey Kong Country 2 by letting the Diddy and Dixie enter the Lost Word after they bribe him. After being paid Kremkoins, Klubba may state that K. Rool treats him and the rest of the minions rotten, wishing that the Kongs will thwart his plans.
- In the manual for Donkey Kong 64, he emotionally manipulates General Klump by pretending to have a tearful breakdown in order to get the Klump to feel sorry for him and do what he wants.
- While he does thank his audience for cheering for him, it can be argued that it's not genuine since he loves the attention they're giving, not the audience themselves.
- There are chained-up skeletons in his abandoned and sunken ships in Gloomy Galleon, and while they were presumably just intended to be set dressing, their presence still has dark implications.
- He crashed the Jungle Jam Tournament and stole all of the Jungle Jam Medals.
- While he is partners with Bubbles from Clu Clu Land in DK: King of Swing in the game's multiplayer mode, it's not canon to the mainline game.
- He stole the Crystal Bananas and intended to use them to tyrannize the universe.
- While he does team up with the Kongs in some multiplayer games such as DK: King of Swing, Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast, and Mario Super Sluggers, he does not do anything truly heroic nor harmless, therefore it does not make him On & Off. This is evident due to the fact that he shares a bad chemistry with the Kongs in Mario Super Sluggers, and although he does team up with Donkey Kong, Mario and their friends to save Baseball Kingdom from Bowser, it was mostly pragmatic as he states that he will never team up with Donkey Kong unless it’s baseball. He wasn’t shown giving celebration towards the victory either, nor their friends in general. He also has bad chemistry with Bowser, showing that he possibly dislikes him too.
- While Wizpig has done worse by destroying and enslaving planets, K Rool still stands out due to not being as powerful as Wizpig.
- While it’s not confirmed that people would die from DK Island’s destruction, K. Rool still outright said it would kill DK: “Soon, Donkey Kong and his pretty little island will be no more”. Most residents of DK Island have similar durability to DK, proving that it would very likely cause deaths.
- While K. Rool survived the destruction of his own island, nobody else that was still on the island was shown to as well, and K. Rool is shown to be extremely durable, taking numerous hits from DK and his allies, much more than most Kremlings, and the Kongs can’t take many hits from the Kremlings either, showing that K. Rool is much more durable than most characters, so he can’t be compared.
- Speaking of which, while the destruction of Crocodile Island was completely accidental, K. Rool never shown any care for any people that died in Crocodile Island, only saying that he will get his revenge on the Kongs while laughing maniacally.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has many moments throughout the series where he is portrayed in a comical light. These moments include going to Wrinkly Kong's school in Donkey Kong Country 2, most of his dialogue with Dixie Kong and cutscenes in Donkey Kong Country 3 (talking about how his wife would kill him due to KAOS being destroyed because it is made from her pots and pans, and Dixie insulting him and his defeat where a giant eggshell traps him when trying to surf away), and multiple occasions during his boss fight in Donkey Kong 64 including showing off for his fans, getting his head stuck in a spotlight, slipping over banana peels due to the spotlight blinding him and flirting with Candy Kong than getting launched out of the arena when Funky Kong shoots a boot at him, as well as him being dragged through space on a Banana Spaceship in Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber.
- Despite having a hostile relationship with the Kongs and being a bad boss to his minions, he occasionally displays respect towards them. Instances include:
- Assisting Cranky Kong and stealing the banana hoard so that Cranky could win a bet in Donkey Kong Land.
- Going to Wrinkly Kong's elementary school classes and even doing homework for it in Donkey Kong Country II: Diddy Kong's Quest.
- Complimenting Dixie and Kiddy on their victory for completing the Lost World’s contest over him and awarding them watches to access the time trial mode in Donkey Kong Land 3.
- Admitting to underestimating the Kongs on their progress in Donkey Kong 64.
- He does show respect to his Klaptraps, as he pushes them to his minions around despite their smaller size and affectionately pats one of his pet Klaptraps in Donkey Kong 64.
- He commends the Kongs for their baseball skills and even joins them on their baseball team in Mario Super Sluggers.
- Despite abusing his Kritter minions, he does have good chemistry with them in said game.
- He is implied to have a good friendship with King Boo in the aforementioned game as they both share good chemistry.
