King Jellyjam is the main antagonist of Goosebumps book #33, The Horror at Camp Jellyjam. He is a large purple blob monster born of radioactive gelatin.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He brainwashed all the councilors and made them his mindless slaves.
- He used the camp as a means of acquiring child slaves to clean him. This is child slavery and extremely illegal.
- He was needlessly harsh and cruel in how he treated the children forced to clean him. He did not allow any breaks, food, or water. All the children were forced to clean him 24/7 with no shifts allowing for even the bare minimum needed to survive. This ensured that all the children would die in a matter of days. When a child collapsed from exhaustion or stopped working even for a few seconds, Jellyjam would immediately devour the child on the spot with no warnings or second chances. He did this to intimidate the rest of his child slaves to continue working and was completely unreasonable in every regard to his treatment of them.
- He ate the children right in front of the others, forcing them to watch while they were forced to continue to work, not allowed to stop even for a second to watch in horror as the child was eaten, lest they be eaten too.
- It's mentioned he killed and ate three children over the course of the book. While this does not happen onscreen, three earthquakes occur during the story, and it is later revealed that these earthquakes were caused by the burps he let out from eating each child. This retroactively means that each earthquake during the story signaled the death of a child.
- He has been enslaving, killing, and eating children for a presumably long time prior to the events of the story.
- When Wendy tells the children to stop working to clean him and lie flat on the ground so Jellyjam can't pick them up and eat them, Jellyjam begins to suffocate in his own stench and tries to eat Wendy out of spite for causing his demise, only to die before he can eat her.
- While he died after the kids stopped cleaning him, considering that he survived for a good period of time in the cave prior to developing the child slavery ring, it is likely that he didn't actually need to be constantly cleaned to stay alive and the only reason he died was because his natural odor worsened as he grew over the years and his lungs were unable to continue to adapt to the smell due to constantly being cleaned over the years. Furthermore, he already had his army of brainwashed councilors to clean him and didn't have to use children. Factoring in this and the way he was needlessly harsh in his treatment of his slaves by not allowing them breaks even though they could easily work in shifts, his behavior goes way beyond what he had to do to simply survive.
- He has an ego to him, calling himself a king, making the councilors call him "master", and making himself the camp mascot. This further eliminates sympathy one may have had for him as an organism simply trying to survive.
- While he does not talk and seems completely mute, he has an established personality via his ego and being intelligent enough to repurpose the camp into a child slave ring.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Jellyjam has Blue-and-Orange Morality due to being a blob of radioactive gelatin mixed with snail DNA and spending his entire existence in his cave, ensuring he knew nothing of human empathy or morals. This makes him impossible to judge by human standards.
- However, his egotism and intelligence make this a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- R.L Stine once stated that Jellyjam was the most disgusting creature he ever created. He's a large creature who sweats snails and smells so bad that his stench can reach the town in a matter of minutes.
