King Courtney (born in 1961) is the overarching antagonist in the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto III, the secondary antagonist of its 2004 prequel Grand Theft Auto Advance and a minor antagonist in its 2005 prequel Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
He is the leader of the Uptown Yardies, one of the many criminal gangs of Liberty City, State of Liberty, United States of America. A treacherous drug and weapon dealer, Courtney recruits several protagonists like Toni Cipriani, Mike and Claude, but all his associations end up in betrayal.
In GTA III, he was voiced by Walter Mudu.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Overall he is a traitorous and cowardly crime lord who always betrays those who help him if they outlive their usefulness, has no redeeming qualities and fakes any affability he shows to the protagonists.
- Although he has a girlfriend called Queen Lizzy he seemingly cares for enough to give Claude the order to kill some Diablos who "dissed" her, it's unknown if he does love her or if she even exists given that King Courtney was working with Catalina all the time and possibly needed for Claude to stop being allied with the Diablos.
- Though he seems to be a good boss to his men, it's unknown if he cares for them or not, as he doesn't seem to bat an eye when Mike massacres most of them.
- Despicably manages to get away with his crimes even though he wrongs three Grand Theft Auto protagonists, with the closest thing to karma he ever receives are just a few wounds and his gang losing a bit of influence.
- Although the Heinous Standards of the 3D Universe are high with the likes of Toni Cipriani, Donald Love, Carl "CJ" Johnson, Frank Tenpenny, Snakehead, Asuka Kasen and Catalina, King Courtney far less resources than them due to being the leader of a simple gang, having no affiliations to corrupt law enforcement and helping the Colombian Cartel in the SPANK distribution in a way too important to dismiss.
- Even considering the fact that Liberty City Triads and Purple Nines were also selling SPANK they worked on much smaller scale than Yardies who were selling SPANK all around city.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories[]
- Allies with the Leone Family and the corrupt Liberty City Police Department cop Leon McAffrey, who owes him a favour and thus feels forced to recruit Toni Cipriani, to take over the Newport District.
- Has Toni kill several Forelli Family members by stealing one of their bikes, guiding them to a place where several Uptown Yardies wait for them and getting them all killed by King Courtney's men.
- Despite Cipriani defending Newport and saving his men when protecting their newly acquired turf, Courtney seemingly orders his men to try to kill him if he ever shows up at Newport again likely for outliving his usefulness, which is totally ungrateful given the help Toni gave to them.
Grand Theft Auto Advance[]
- Has an involvement in the illegal racing that takes place around Staunton Island.
- Tricks Mike into working for him and help him to win the gang war against the Colombian Cartel to prevent Mike from discovering that his friend Vinnie faked his death.
- Orders Mike to butcher three Colombian Cartel groups of thugs so he can steal their "coffee".
- Sends Mike to kill two lieutenants of Cisco, the Colombian Cartel's leader, as they met with other gang members, whom Mike kills as well.
- Frames Cisco of killing Vinnie so Mike doesn't try to murder him once he realizes that Courtney is using him, leading Mike to nearly kill Cisco before he proves his innocence.
- Forces a driver employed by the Yakuza of Liberty City to deliver raw fugu fish to Asuka Kasen's restaurants, which causes several clients to get food poisoning and fill several lawsuits against the restaurant. This later causes the driver to be discovered by Mike and delivered before Asuka, who brutally executes him in turn.
- Tries to kill Mike to steal his money.
- Sends his Yardie to kill Mike once he decides to confront him at his warehouse before fleeing from Liberty City, leading Mike to massacre all of Courtney's men and prompt a desperate Courtney to grab a rocket launcher to try to blow his former ally up.
- Cowardly begs for Mike to spare him as he lies heavily wounded, only being spared because Mike doesn't find killing him worthy of his time as the LCPD raids the building, whom he somehow manages to avoid and escape offscreen.
Grand Theft Auto III[]
- Assists Catalina and Miguel in distributing their SPANK drug around Liberty City, leading all consumers to lose their minds given how addictive and violent the drug turns someone.
- Sends Claude to drive-by and kill ten Diablos for offending his girlfriend Queen Lizzy, though it's likely this was just a way to manipulate him to cut ties with the Diablos.
- Orders Claude to steal three cars, a Mafia Sentinel, a Yakuza Stinger and a Diablo Stallion respectively, to attack his rivals.
- Unlike Catalina, King Courtney doesn't get any commeuppance for his actions and the story ends with him still alive and active.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- While he can't be compared to the most atrocious villains of the 3D Universe due to his low resources, King Courtney still fails the Heinous Standards to Marty Jay Williams, who is clearly less resourceful than him due to being a lowlife redneck with just a few men to his employ that manages to be far worse due to his domestic abuse, unique sex crimes, and willingness to kill a baby.
Trivia[]
- In the BETA version for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, it was originally planned for Leon McAffrey and Donald Love to give Toni Cipriani a mission in which he would have betrayed the Uptown Yardies for an Irish-American gang he would have befriended, thus justifiably giving a reason for the Yardies to get hostile to Toni during free roam. Rockstar Games ultimately removed the Irish-American gang from the game but seemingly forgot to remove the hostility from the Yardies. Had this oversight not happened, it would have made King Courtney less heinous at least in that game.
