“ | I've always so enjoyed the last few quiet moments before laying a planet to waste... | „ |
~ King Cold. |
“ | My clan is feared throughout the universe! What fool dares challenge our supremacy? I will afford him the honor of dying by the hand of King Cold himself! | „ |
~ King Cold. |
King Cold is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside King Vegeta) of the Dragon Ball franchise. He is the father of Frieza and Cooler.
In Dragon Ball Z, he serves as the unseen overarching antagonist of the Namek saga, the secondary antagonist of the Trunks saga and a posthumous antagonist for the rest of the series. He is also a posthumous antagonist in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F and one of the two posthumous overarching antagonists (alongside King Vegeta) of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie.
He is the self-proclaimed king of Universe 7 and the founder and creator of the Planet Trade Organization, as he is the one who operates behind the scenes.
He was voiced by the late Daisuke Gōri in DBZ, Masaharu Satō in episode 195 of DBZ and Ryūzaburō Ōtomo in DBZ Kai in Japanese and Brad Jackson in DBZ and Jason Douglas (who also voices Gotou from Parasyte) in DBZ Kai in Funimation dub and Michael Dobson in Ocean Group dub in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He created the Planet Trade Organization, where he and his men conquer numerous planets throughout the universe before enslaving and exterminating its inhabitants to sell them to the highest bidder. It is implied that he did this for quite some time, surely causing the death of trillions of beings.
- Raised and trained his sons Frieza and Cooler to become the villains they are today.
- As seen in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he passes the leadership of the Trade Planet Organization power to Frieza carry on his legacy despite knowing quite well that his son is more ruthless and sadistic than him.
- Frieza mentions that only Goku hit him as hard as his father did in their battle on Namek (although he might have been exaggerating).
- Was implied to be a neglectful and unloving father to his firstborn Cooler, having heavily valued Frieza over him due to his immense power. King Cold was even spiteful enough to pass Cooler on as the rightful heir to the empire despite his status as his firstborn, which likely contributed to Cooler’s hatred and jealousy of Frieza.
- He used the Saiyans in his conquest of planets and extermination of their races, even teaching them how to use their technology, which makes him partially responsible for King Vegeta's actions, including him stabbing Broly.
- Initially thinking his son Frieza was dead, Cold shatters one of his ship's windows with just his mind, causing one of his men to be sucked into space, dying in the process.
- While arriving on Earth to finish off Goku, Cold initially considered destroying Earth at that precise moment, only to be stopped by his son as he wanted to reach Earth to slowly exterminate all humans just to hurt Goku even more.
- After Frieza's death at the hands of Future Trunks, Cold is quite unconcerned about it, and even offers Trunks a chance to replace his son in conquering planets, showing that Cold hardly cared about him, and most likely he doesn't care about his other son, Cooler, either considering he never mentions him even once and Cooler seems to resent him.
- He attempted to kill Future Trunks with his own sword after he refused his offer to join his organization in conquering planets.
- In the anime, he and Frieza are shown taking sadistic pleasure in watching Cell and the Ginyu Force torture a group of ogres in order to escape Hell.
- He and the other dead villains are shown cheering for Kid Buu in his fight with Goku, wanting Goku dead.
- While it is implied that he was affable at first, with King Vegeta surprised that he did not extend his hand to him when he arrived on Planet Vegeta, he appears to have subverted him by the time of the series.
- Frieza not showing any love for him by refusing to revive him doesn't make him a scapegoat, as he got what he deserved for being such a horrible being.
- While other villains in the series like his sons, Kid Buu, Goku Black/Zamasu and Moro did far worse, Cold still stands out due to the fact that he is much less powerful than those four and his screen time is extremely short, not to mention he may have been the one who turned both Frieza and Cooler into the monsters they are, and having been the creator of the interplanetary trade organization, making him responsible for many of the bad events that occurred in the franchise, such as the destruction of Planet Vegeta, Planet Namek, Earth and Future Trunks' timeline, the genocide of the Saiyan and Namekian races, the deaths of Dende, Krillin, Goku, King Kai, Future Trunks, Androids 17 and 16 and the rest of the Z-Fighters in both the present and future timelines, the near destruction of Universe 7, the rise of multiple villains such as his sons, the Saiyans, the androids, Cell, Baby, and the Shadow Dragons and more to come as the franchise continues, both directly and indirectly.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He suffers from off-screen villainy as he is never seen conquering and exterminating numerous planets in the universe, causing him to not stand out compared to his sons Frieza and Cooler. However, considering that Cold was responsible for turning them into the monsters they are today, and that he initially planned to destroy Earth, it's only a very minor prevention.
