King Arthur later known as the Green Knight is the overarching antagonist of the Tales of Arcadia franchise, serving as one of the two unseen overarching antagonists of the first installment Trollhunters (alongside Bellroc), an cameo antagonist in the second installment 3Below, the central antagonist of third installment Wizards and a posthumous antagonist in the fourth and final installment Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.
He was the King of Camelot who waged a genocidal war against Trollkind, including Gunmar, to avenge the death of his wife, Queen Guinevere, having no care about whether or not they were good or evil, and thus deeming them all as dangerous. However, upon his sister, Morgana snapping, and eventual accidental death at Arthur's hands, Arthur became remorseful for his crimes and wanted to atone but he was tragically killed by Bellroc seconds before redeeming. Now, resurrected by Bellroc and Skrael as the Green Knight, Arthur desires nothing more than to help them destroy the universe and remake the world in their own image by capturing Nari, breaking the Genesis Seals, and unleashing the Titans, having been convinced that it is the true path to his twisted sense of redemption, having lost nearly all of his redeeming qualities as a result.
He was voiced by James Faulkner.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He waged a genocidal crusade on magical beings, raiding and razing the lands of goblins, gnomes, and especially trolls while imprisoning others in his dungeons.
- One of them was Deya, who was given her human name Callista, a survivor of a troll village called Tombro.
- Once Morgana told him that he didn't expect that the trolls would come for him and his kingdom, he decided to kill all of the trolls in his dungeons and succeeds in killing dozens of them.
- He threatens Morgana that if she doesn't help him kill more trolls, he will have her beheaded.
- He has a Gumm-Gumm, who posed no threat to him as he was simply walking around the forest, tortuously executed by chaining him and dragging him into the sunlight.
- He has Bular captured and hosts a tournament between knights of different lands, with the winner being given the honor of killing Bular.
- When he was resurrected as the Green Knight after his death during the Battle of the Killahead Bridge, he attacks the Heartstone beneath Hoboken, New Jersey, and punctures Jim's heart with one of his Onyx Shards, thus starting to slowly corrupt him against his will.
- When Jim's corruption is complete, Arthur enslaves him by placing his soul in a prison, forcing him to walk around Killahead Bridge in a loop for all of eternity and the loop tightens as he is further trapped every time he tries to escape, thus placing him in a fate worse than death.
- He attacks his own kingdom alongside Bellroc and Skrael to take Nari by force, and when she uses her magic to create a time rift to the 12th century, the three destroy the Heart of Avalon, causing Camelot to crash into and destroy Arcadia Oaks-High though Douxie, Jim, Claire, and Steve manage to go through the time rift.
- When the Guardians of Arcadia refuse to surrender Nari to the Arcane Order, the Green Knight enslaves Jim by turning him into a full troll and psychologically tortures him by trapping his soul in the Shadow Realm, even though Jim was trying to fight it but was left unable to.
- He convinces Bellroc and Skrael to release Morgana from the Shadow Realm, but only because she could still prove to be useful to them, thus making it dishonorable.
- He kills Merlin despite how much help he has brought him in the 12th century, and despite him being a wizard, and also being one of his closest friends. He is also seen sadistically smiling after this.
- Alongside Bellroc and Skrael, he infiltrates Hex Tech, abducting all of the Guardians of Arcadia that are there, minus Krel, but only because Skrael already trapped him in ice.
- He rejects any chance of redemption that Morgana has offered him and ultimately kills her, who is his own sister, during their final battle while calling her a disgrace to Camelot's memory. Moments like this prove Arthur genuinely doesn't want redemption despite what he says by the time he becomes the Green Knight, having subverted remorse for any of his crimes, and that Arthur's sense of redemption is a twisted way of saying he wants catharsis.
- Though he was described by Merlin as "clearly born of dark magic" as the Green Knight, Arthur still has moral agency as he was actually resurrected by Bellroc and Skrael's magic and chose to be the Green Knight instead of being brainwashed into it, as Morgana was shocked to see that it was his choice and she only wanted to believe that he was struggling to break free from their control.
- His claims of finding redemption by helping Bellroc and Skrael destroy the universe and remake the Earth in their own image are ultimately rendered moot as he became even worse as the Green Knight. Though he used to care about the people he ruled over in Camelot, once he goes along with Bellroc and Skrael's plan, he shredded any care he had for his people out of pure misanthropic spite, pushing him further beyond redemption.
- While he suffered from a tragic past where his wife, Guinevere, was killed by a Stalkling, it does nothing to excuse his actions for many reasons:
- He hated magical creatures even before then, as shown when he swung a wooden sword as a boy at Nari even though she was being friendly towards Guinevere and Morgana.
- He waged war against all magical creatures, no matter if they were good or evil, even though none of them had anything to do with him.
- His excuse is rendered even more invalid when he becomes the Green Knight and went to an even bigger extreme of plotting to commit universal omnicide simply out of his own catharsis.
- While he is willing to serve Bellroc and Skrael without ever betraying them, he is only siding with them for his own reasons.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He still genuinely loved Guinevere as her death is what motivated his evil actions as the King of Camelot. Even as the Green Knight, his soul is shown in the Shadow Realm through a vision of himself protecting Guinevere from the Stalkling that killed her.
Trivia[]
- King Arthur is mentioned in the non-canon game Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia, where his sister, Morgana, serves as the main antagonist. However, due to his lack of screen time, Arthur isn't considered Near Pure Evil in that version.
