Heheheh... Heheheheh... To my people, I am a hero...... to you? I'M THE BAD GUY!!!
~ King introducing himself to the Delta Warriors.
KING - Abandoned by the Lightners, his heart became cracked with hatred. He cannot be reasoned with, but don't give up...!
~ King's description in the "Check" option.

King is the opening antagonist of the 2018 indie video game Deltarune, serving as the main antagonist of Chapter 1: The Beginning and a minor character in Chapter 2: A Cyber's World. He will presumably return in future chapters.

He is the cruel ruler of the Card Kingdom and the father of Lancer, who despises Lightners and will do anything to get revenge on them for abandoning his kind years ago.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He betrayed the other three kings of the Card Kingdom by imprisoning them and taking all the power for himself and Lancer.
  • He wants to invade the Light World and reshape it into a Dark World by covering it in darkness, all while saying that he will launch a campaign that will make the Lightners "live in despair".
    • While not confirmed, it's possible it is genocidal.
  • He constantly abuses his servants, with a Ruddin mentioning whoever will say that Lancer befriended a Lightner will get in trouble, and even going as far as to make only one person, Rouxls Kaard, allowed to make puzzles and traps.
  • Even though he does love Lancer, he's still a horribly neglectful parent with Rouxls briefly implying he forgets to feed him.
  • He sends his army to kill Kris, Susie and Ralsei to stop them from sealing the Dark Fountain.
  • He strangles and threatens to kill Lancer if Kris, Susie and Ralsei don’t bow to him.
    • It being a lie barely negates it, as he still uses Lancer to his advantage and made them think he would.
  • He tried to kill the Delta Warriors with his own hands and wants Lancer to watch it the first time he tried.
  • He used his "tragic" backstory to manipulate Ralsei into healing him, only to knock him out and try to kill Kris and Susie.
  • He attempted to kill Kris by using his shades attack, while also mocking Susie's threat towards them, "Quiet people piss me off", only failing due to Susie's intervening.
  • If the player spares every single previous enemy, thus making Lancer convince the Card Kingdom to rebel against King, he'll angrily threaten to kill them all.
  • While he has a tragic backstory of being abandoned by the Lightners, it is invalidated by him using it to manipulate Ralsei.
  • While he claims that Queen is an even bigger tyrant than he is, this is completely false and hypocritical as Queen genuinely wants to do the right thing and redeemed herself when proven otherwise, while King bitterly refuses to change his ideals no matter what despite being partially aware he's the "bad guy."
  • While not as heinous as the Knight, he has less resources as he can't create Dark Fountains like the Knight can.
    • Additionally, while he might lack the brainwashing of Queen and Jevil's attempted mass slaughter of the kingdom, it's worth to note King has no means of brainwashing people and is heavily implied to be weaker than Jevil.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite his cruel treatment of him, he does truly love his son Lancer, as he admits his threat to kill him was a lie, he asks Susie if Lancer's happy following his imprisonment, and gives Queen advice on how to calm him down if he's crying.
  • He's played like a joke practically every time the player interacts with him in Chapter 2, with King ordering the heroes to be jealous of his giant water bottle and Queen mocking him for the way he sleeps.
  • He's disgusted at the heroes if the player doesn't save everyone from the Cyber World, calling them out for abandoning them, showing he has some slight standards and might even care about the well-being of Darkners.

Trivia[]

  • According to Toby Fox in a live-stream, the Dark Fountain might have actually influenced King's behavior and changed him to an evil tyrant. If this ever gets shown in-universe, this would give King moral agency issues and thus a fourth prevention. However, this is yet to be shown in-game, and Word of God is not taken into matter. It's also unclear if 'influencing' him would mean taking away his free will or merely tempting him.
