There is no real need to have a reason to do things. People who can't act without a reason are trash. I will do what I want. I mean, I've got this precious life and everything; might as well make the best of it, right?
~ Kichimura to Kaneki
Eventually everything will come to naught. I ever since I was a child, I have know. Living, dying, creating, consuming. Valueless, meaningless, it's all pointless. You, your wife, you child, your friends and your enemies. They'll all die anyway. It's all be gone, one day. This world is just a toy chest. You can play with it while you can, but when the time comes, it's all over. The chest is shut, and there's no reopening it.
~ The nihilistic vision of Kichimura Washuu

Kichimura Washuu (born Souta Washuu-Furuta) is the main antagonist of the Tokyo Ghoul franchise.

He is a Rank 1 Ghoul Investigator under the name of Nimura Furuta who served as the Bureau Director of the CCG after the death of his father, Tsuneyoshi Washuu. He was also a member of the Clowns and of the Ghoul Restaurant under the name of Souta and a collaborator of Akihiro Kanou.

As Kichimura, he is voiced by Daisuke Kishio, who also voiced Erol in Jak II, and by Oki Sugiyama as Souta in the Japanese version of the anime, and by David Trosko in the English version.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He is a nihilistic and highly delusional sociopath who serves as an agent to different organizations, such as V, CCG, Aogiri Tree, Clowns and Ghoul Restaurant with the sole goal of causing chaos and destroying society.
  • While he had a genuine tragedy of being raised as a Half-Human destined to have a premature death, he ended up going over this tragedy by attempting to cause a genocide towards both Ghouls and humans, giving that they have nothing to do with his past.
  • By causing the steel beam incident, he is the one indirectly responsible of many of the series' events, being the most notable, Kaneki's transformation into a Half-Ghoul.
  • While he has many comedic moments, most of them are either overshadowed by his atrocious actions or reflect his unstable personality, meaning that he is treated seriously in-universe.

Background[]

  • While he helped Rize Kamishiro to escape from the Sunlit Garden to avoid her from being raped, he only did it to get her attention, since he wanted her for himself, acting out of pure lust.
  • After forming himself as a Ghoul Investigator, he went to Uta and joined to the Clowns, claiming his identity as a Ghoul Investigator.
  • He joined the Ghoul Restaurant, a secret organization where sadistic Ghouls reunited to enjoy a human meal slaughtered in front of them in a previous show.

Tokyo Ghoul[]

  • He orchestrated the steel beam incident, where, in order to capture Rize, her and Ken Kaneki were fatally injured, leading to Kaneki's transplant, indirectly causing most of the events of the story.
  • He lured an overweight girl named Ami to the Ghoul Restaurant as part of the menu. After she started cursing him, he mocked her weight and stated that her fat would be properly treated. Eventually Ami was slaughtered by the scrapper, Taro.
  • During an undetermined time, he served as Akihiro Kanou's bodyguard, receiving the Rize's kakuhou and turning into a Half-Ghoul. During this time, he also prevented Madam A from devouring Kanou and offered her a job, providing her the upper-class lifestyle she ended up having.
  • While there's a short scene where he acts nice to Touka Kirishima, this moment is too brief to be preventing. Aditionally, an extra scene reveals that he was completely aware that she was a Ghoul, confirming that he was only maintaining his facade.

Tokyo Ghoul:re[]

  • He used one of his partner's body, Okahira, as a human shield after the latter told him to stay behind him.
  • While he seemed to care for his superior, Shiki Kijima and was presumably saddened by his death during the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation in the building Lunar Eclipse, he then revealed that he didn't care for him, by stepping on his corpse and taking his quinque, and, after the operation, even mocking his death.
  • After his actions were questioned by Matsumae, he crushed her eyes and used his superior's quinque to slaughter her.
  • He killed a Ghoul Investigator witness of the occured during the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation in order to silence him and proceeded mounted a story that he was the only survivor.
  • He calmly watched how the Aogiri assaulted the trucks where the fallen Investigators were being transported, taking the corpses.
  • Alongside his new superior, Haise Sasaki, investigated Eto Yoshimura's appartment without an official order, though, to be fair, this is quite justified, since Eto was in fact a dangerous Ghoul.
  • When he visited Eto in Cochlea, he flirted with her and offered her a special treatment in exchange of information about the One-Eyed King and even talked about his ideals of controlling the masses by diverting them to a common enemy to get what he wants. When he obtained nothing, he assured her that she would be executed.
  • While he told Eto that her revolutions would cause no more but death and sadness, this was mere hypocrisy, as even Eto noted that he, for living as a human, was speaking from a privileged point of view.
  • He murdered Eto's assistant, Shunji Shiono and used his corpse to make pate, offering it to Eto.
  • He encountered Sasaki and Hinami Fueguchi while they were trying to escape from Cochlea and fought them, tough he ended up being overmatched.
  • When Touka and Ayato's group were escaping Cochlea through the compactor, he, alongside some V members activated the machine, presumably crushing them, though they actually survived thanks to Eto.
  • When fighting Eto, he kept a cowardly facade, until he revealed his nature as a Half-Ghoul and left her close to death, mocking and denigrating her, and sarcastically revealing his true motivations of achieve peace.
  • He made his father, Tsuneyoshi Washuu, to write a letter where he named him heir of the Bureau Director position before killing him.
    • While it is clear that Tsuneyoshi deserved it due to how much of a selfish and repulsive monster he previously proved himself to be, Kichimura didn't act out of any kind of justice, but only for pragmatic reasons.
  • During a meeting to determine who the next director will be, he gave a false and dirty image of Sasaki when questioned about him.
  • When he met Sasaki, he revealed his implication in the Washuu family massacre and mocked him after the latter asked him why he chose him during the steel beam incident, revealing that he was just someone who crossed paths with him and Rize.
  • He talked about his intentions of raping Rize and having a lot of babies with her, this despite the fact that she is his half-sister as well as being in an unconscious state.
  • He orchestrated the Clown Siege in his favor in such a way he would tell the CCG exactly how to act and subsequently, get the director promotion. During this invasion, whe used humans as a decoy, causing Ghoul Investigators to kill some of them before discovering the misded.
  • When he was promoted to Bureau Director, during the ceremony, he presented the Oggai, a variant One-Eyed Ghouls composed merely by experimented children with the sole objective of exterminating until the last Ghoul in Tokyo. Then, he presented a group of Clowns and a fake Kaneki, all of them executed in front of the entire CCG.
  • He tricked Koori Ui, telling him that they could bring Hairu Ihei back to life just to convince him to accept Kanou's alliance. He would then use the excuse that with kagune's creativity, life itself can be created.
  • He, the Oggai and many members from the CCG participated in a Ghoul mass genocide all around Tokyo, killing at least thousands of them until the point that in the 23th Ward alone, the extermination percentage was of 88%.
  • Falsely flattered a Ghoul Investigator, Takeomi Kuroiwa, just to later reveal that his wife had been unjustly accused of protecting a Ghoul, which ended up in Takeomi attacking the Ghoul Investigator, Tooru Mutsuki and Kichimura talking to his father, Iwao Kuroiwa about how the incident could influence negatively in the family's reputation.
  • When Iwao and Kuki Urie entered his office to interrogate him, he used the clowns, Roma Hotio and Shikorae to stop them, and did not interfere until they were defeated, when he stabbed Iwao in the neck with a katana, leaving him seriously injured and later escaped.
  • Having arrived to the Goat base, he, alongside Zero Squad and Oggai, slaughtered many of Goat members and mutilated Kaneki, who was forced to commit cannibalism towards Oggai and turned himself into the Dragon that Kichimura had been looking for.
  • After the Dragon Orphans started getting out of the Dragon, he revealed his plan of making the creatures to devour humans and leave the energy to the oviduct where Rize was and that energy was going to be used to create more monsters to devour more humans. If the creatures were destroyed, their poison was going to be used to turn any human around into a Ghoul.
  • During his fight with Kaneki, he mocked him due to all of his mistakes, and, despite being amputated, he awoke his kakuja form and started brutally attacking, having a mental breakdown and wishing to have everything.
  • In his final moments, he refuses to show remorse, and instead, highlights his nihilistic personality, talking about the world analogy that it is like a toy chest that you played with and enjoyed as much as you could, but after the chest is closed, it's never opened again, such as life, where everything that has once existed, will eventually wither and die. He then tells Kaneki that if only he hadn't met with Rize that day, all the role of stopping him would've never be in his hands.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Although it does not justify his actions, his backstory is shown to be played for sympathy, as he was once a normal kid trained in the Sunlit Garden who discovered that he was destined to die prematurely and was going to be used a political pawn by his sexually abusive and twisted father, which served as a motivation for him to do whatever he wanted before dying.
    • His death is also played for sympathy, as he genuinely asked Kaneki if he would laugh if he told him that he just wanted to live normally, which Kaneki refuses.
  • Despite his twisted relationship with Rize Kamishiro, in his last moments not only he recalls their childhood moments together, but also imagines him and Rize having a happy life with children, showing that despite everything, he held at least a bit of care for her.

Trivia[]

  • He is the third Tokyo Ghoul character to be approved as NPE, the first one being Yakumo Oomori and the second one being Akihiro Kanou.
