Kathleen Coghlan is a major antagonist in the HBO post apocalyptic drama television series The Last of Us, an adaptation of the 2013 video game of the same name, serving as the main antagonist of the Season 1 episodes "Please Hold to My Hand" and "Endure and Survive".

She is the leader of Kansas City after having overthrown the FEDRA government ruling over her. Coghlan is the arch-enemy of Henry Burrel, whom she tries to hunt down out of vengeance for her brother Michael's death.

She was portrayed by Melanie Lynskey.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • While she was initially a well-intentioned extremist, having overthrown the FEDRA government due to it’s corruption, Cathleen exhibits herself as a tyrant and began to extend her power, brutally suppressing any other opposition as she focused her revenge on Henry over her citizens lives.
  • She has many collaborates of FEDRA, who sold information for extra food and medicine, executed through public hanging and being set on fire. While they did collaborate on FEDRA and did sold others out, it’s not justifiable as it’s made clear that the collaborators were desperate and needed food and medicine while Cathleen killed them out of petty spite.
  • After establishing her own regime, she began ordering survivors passing through to be murdered and their supplies raided.
  • She threaten a group do collaborators to reveal the information on Henry, and promises them to be imprisoned instead of executed. After getting the information she needed, Cathleen callously goes back on her word and orders the collaborators shot dead.
  • After finding out about one of her men’s death, she immediately killed Doctor Edelstein, dismissing the fact he was a doctor they needed.
  • Ordered Henry and anyone he was with to be hunted down and killed, which included his innocent younger brother Sam simply out of pettiness, blaming him for Michael’s death and orders a ransacking of all the citizens home.
  • When told by Perry about the underground horde of Clickers, Cathleen dismisses any concerns and refuses to inform her people or deal with it, instead focusing her efforts on finding Henry, being okay with endangering her people’s lives for her revenge.
  • When cornering Henry, Ellie and Sam, she refuses Henry’s pleading to let the children go and says that Sam should have died anyway instead of Micheal.
  • Her actions resulted in all of Kansas City being invaded by the underground horde, with all her people getting needlessly slaughtered as she became hellbent on trying to murder Henry one final time.

What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • While her motives aren’t justified by her cruel revenge, she is genuinely tragic, as she was another oppressed individual againts FEDRA who initially followed her brother’s pacifism before he was sold out and killed, turning into a vengeful dictator hellbent on getting revenge.
  • He legitimately cares for her late brother, Micheal, with her motivation being towards his death at the hands of FEDRA after Henry sold him out, and reminisce about happier moments over their childhood where he protected her from bad dreams.
    • She shows to respect her men at times, notably her right hand Perry, opening uo to him about her problems and showing respect to him as he sacrificed himself to save her life, and shows to be angered at another member’s, Bryan’s death.

Trivia[]

  • She is the only villain from The Last of Us franchise to be Near Pure Evil.
