No matter the method utilized, in the end, victory is the only thing that matters!
~ Kars
Look at you fools! Don't you want to have dominion over the sun? To stand in ascendance over all life? To purge your fears and reign forever as gods?! If not, then die.
~ Kars to his fellow Pillar Men before slaughtering them.

Kars is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Diavolo) of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise. He is the overarching antagonist of Part I: Phantom Blood and the main antagonist of Part II: Battle Tendency.

He is one of the last living Pillar Men, and the one who created the stone mask. He, alongside his henchmen Wamuu and Esidisi, attempts to obtain the Stone of Aja to be invincible. He is the arch-nemesis of Joseph Joestar.

He was voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue (who also voices Gotou from Parasyte) in all current Japanese appearances, and John DeMita in the English dub of the anime.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General/Background[]

  • Views humans as lower beings, and he wanted to utilize his invincibility to rule over them as a god.
  • Wiped out the entire race of Pillar Men, possibly including his own parents, once they try to stop him from reaching his goals of perfecting the Stone Mask with no remorse.
    • And although the Pillar Men tried to kill him, they did this as Kars’s goal to perfect the stone mask would require an unbelievable amount of energy for consumption and would result in the total devastation of the Earth’s ecosystem.
  • While he has a somewhat tragic background of being trapped underground and unable to see sunlight, it serves nothing to excuse him slaughtering his fellow Pillar Men, who all experience the same "tragedy" with him.
  • Thousand of years ago, Kars created the Stone Masks and had them distributed across the world with humans becoming vampires, as is the case of Dio Brando, which makes him indirectly responsible for all of the events in Phantom Blood after Dio became a vampire, including Stardust Crusaders, and Diamond is Unbreakable, Golden Wind and Stone Ocean after DIO was gone.
    • The immortality/vampirism caused by the Stone Mask, combined with the arrows that awakened his stand known as The World, gave DIO the means to corrupt Enrico Pucci into a villain so that he could help with DIO's Heaven Plan, which would result with the reset of the entire universe, causing countless deaths via Pucci's evolved stand: Made in Heaven. Even if Emporio Alniño undid DIO and Pucci's work by killing the latter, he was still left with immense and irreversible trauma when the victims of the universal reset came back with the same souls, yet slightly altered personalities. Because of this, both Kars and Diavolo are to blame for indirectly causing all of this to happen.
  • Unlike Esidisi and Wamuu, Kars did not show true regard for Santana despite having raised him, viewing Santana more as a guard dog due to not being able to keep up with the others and leaving him behind in Mexico.
  • Experimented the stone mask on hundreds of people to become part of his vampire army.
  • Eliminated the tribe of Ripple users in Rome during his attempt to get the Stone of Aja.
  • Ordered Wamuu to kill a child of the Ripple users in Rome, and when Wamuu expressed his doubts and says it's only a young boy, he killed the child himself.
  • While he had the redeeming quality of admiring nature (evidenced by when he saves a dog from being ran over by drunk drivers and when he stops himself from hitting a plant when he fell off a cliff), this quality was later subverted when he became the Ultimate Lifeform, shown by when he controls a squirrel he created and has it devour another squirrel and watches with a complete lack of reaction.
  • Although he has a few comedic moments, such as laughing out of nowhere and making weird noises while rubbing Lisa Lisa’s legs, none of them are detracting qualities whatsoever and emphasises his twisted nature.

Part II: Battle Tendency[]

  • Ruthlessly murdered innocents just for going after the Stone of Aja.
  • He tried to kill Joseph after the latter killed Esidisi, vowing to make him suffer.
  • Shows no respect for Wamuu's sense of honor and believed him to be unfit to be a warrior because of it.
  • Views his vampires as nothing but pawns, killing them whenever they annoy him.
  • During his duel with Lisa Lisa, he tricks her by using a body double and fatally attacking her from behind, dishonoring the duel and the memory of Wamuu.
  • Watches a squirrel getting killed by its clone while testing his newfound powers with glee, thus subverting his care for nature.
  • When he becomes the Ultimate Lifeform, he takes sadistic pleasure in seeing the cries of despair and terror from Joseph before attempting to kill him, reveling in his status as the Ultimate Lifeform. It went exactly as he imagined as Joseph screamed when he slashed off his left arm's hand.
  • Although his defeat of being stuck floating through space forever is rather cruel, it is not played for sympathy due to how evil he has been shown to be, in fact, he somewhat caused this to himself due to his obsession with immortality.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite his ruthlessness, he genuinely cares about his comrades, Esidisi and Wamuu. He even openly stated that he will get rid of Joseph in order to avenge the fallen two after he became the Ultimate Lifeform.
    • He began to worry about Esidisi after not hearing from the latter when he was in Venice. After discovering that Joseph killed him, Kars vowed to avenge Esidisi's demise.
    • He forgave Wamuu for accidentally instinctively attacking him, even apologizing to him for stepping on his shadow knowing that the latter hates whenever someone does. And after Wamuu's death, he murdered his minions when they mocked his demise. This shows that while he doesn't show respect for Wamuu's honor, he still cared for the latter regardless.

Trivia[]

  • He and Yoshikage Kira are the only main antagonists of their respective parts to be Near Pure Evil. As of JoJolion, all other main antagonists are Pure Evil.
  • Considering Araki's canonical works, Kars and Esidisi are the only Near Pure Evil JoJo's Bizarre Adventure villains to not have a stand.
  • He and Daniel J. D'Arby are the only JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Near Pure Evils to not die.
