Fool! Did you really believe that a common thief would be allowed to leave the crypt with the Dragon's Heart? Only a true servant of Kong Tien can wield its awesome power! Ahhhaahahahahaha... at last the power of the first Emperor is mine.
~ Kai Ti Chang to Indiana Jones.

Kai Ti Chang is the main antagonist of the 2003 action-adventure video game Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, the third original Indiana Jones video game.

He is a Chinese army marshal, the leader of the Black Dragon Triad and an ally of the Nazis. In 1935, Chang discovers that the American archaeologist Indiana Jones is sabotaging his Nazi collaborators in finding the extremely powerful Heart of the Dragon, so he decides to recruit Jones to double-cross Adolf Hitler and obtain the Heart only for himself.

He was voiced by Keone Young, who also voiced Jei in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012).

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Became the head of the Black Dragon Triad while posing as a respected Chinese marshall in the country's military, ruling China's criminal underworld with an iron fist.
  • Worshipped the demonic deity Kong Tien, a soul-possessing demons for whom Chang would often perform ritals and sacrifices at an underground temple he built in the Black Dragon Fortress he built at Peng Lai Island.
    • The underground level where Kong Tien's chamber is located is filled with the corpses of Triad fighters, implying that Chang sacrificed several of his own men just to appease Kong Tien.
  • Aspired to find the legendary Heart of the Dragon, a magical black pearl hidden inside the late Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb that, according to legend, would give its user control over all men's will, which Chang wished to use to subject all of China to his will and take his home country over.
  • Teamed up with Nazi colonel Albrecht Von Beck and his men to find the three fragments of the Mirror of Dreams, a necessary artifact to navigate the Emperor's Tomb to retrieve the Heart, under the promise that he would be handed over German weaponry (which he got by allowing Von Beck to build a Nazi base at Peng Lai).
    • Furthermore, Chang originally agreed with Von Beck to give him the Heart of the Dragon for Adolf Hitler once he was done taking over China, but secretly, Chang planned to turn against Von Beck and his men once they outlived their usefulness. Although Von Beck planned to do the same, Chang most likely didn't know, so the treacherous intention counts.
  • Hires the secret Chinese agent Mei Ying as his assistant, secretly planning to rule with her by his side. Despite this, he treats her poorly, as Chang dismisses her warnings about the danger the Heart of the Dragon poses as a consequence of her vivid imagination and impeteous tongue.
  • Opts to double cross the Nazis when Indiana Jones accidentally interfers with Von Beck's operations when claiming the Kouru Watu idol from the British Ceylon, feeling that Indy could find the Heart of the Dragon before all of the Nazis and allow him to not keep his word with Von Beck. By doing this, Chang causes the deaths of several Nazis at Indy's hands and endangers Indy's life by not warning him about their involvement in the plot.
  • Orders Von Beck and his men to kidnap Mei Ying once he finds out through his henchwomen the Feng Twins that she has alerted Indy about his true plans, leading Chang to try to have Mei murdered in the sceneario of a Chinese opera house while giving Indy some champagne to taunt him over it, leading Indy to go to rescue his love interest in a chase that leads to the deaths of most of Von Beck's men inside the opera house and over Hong Kong's streets.
  • Intimidates Von Beck with killing him due to calling him out while they are on his island.
  • Announces to a bound, gagged and caged Mei that he will sacrifice her soul to Kong Tien due to her act of treason (noting that such is the punishment to all traitors) in order to satiate Tien's hunger for souls and get the Mirror of Dreams as whole, swearing that he will have all those who oppose him swept aside as the storm that follows. He then leaves the room with Mei scared for her incoming fate and leaves the Feng Twins behind to face Indy as he sneaks into the room to rescue Mei.
    • One of the Feng Twins tells the other that their master wishes for Indy's head on a stake, implying that Chang desecrates and mutilates the corpses of his enemies possibly as trophies.
  • Performs the soul-sacrificing ritual for Kong Tien on Mei Ying (even though he could have used any of his other men) before being interrupted by Indy, but the ritual is partially successful, leaving Indy alone to fight a Mei-possessed Kong Tien (though they both survive albeit Mei with some traumas) while he runs away with his surviving men out of the room, not even batting an eye at how some of his men die escaping from their goddess.
  • Finds the Emperor's Tomb in the Shaanxi Province, China and leaves all of his men guarding the tomb to kill Jones or Von Beck if they ever show up again.
  • Gloats at Indy not being able to resist the Heart of the Dragon's unwileding power due to his devotion to Kong Tien before summonging a terracota warrior army to kill him, only surviving thanks to Mei's intervention.
  • Ties Mei up with demonic fire (something that evidently makes her suffer) and summons a giant dragon to kill Indy once and for all.
  • Although he seems to treat his Feng Twins well, there's nothing to suggest that he truly cares for them (they are implied to have ratted Mei out out of jealousness due to Kai neglecting them), apparently not acknowledging their absences once Indy defeats them and they are possibly left to die in the destruction of the Peng Lai Island's fortress.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite how dangerous he is with the Heart of the Dragon, Kai simply fails the Heinous Standards due to being too pragmatic, as he has access to one of the most powerful artifacts Indiana Jones ever finds in his adventures, as the Heart of the Dragon is stated to be able to control all men's wills and Von Beck incidentally wishes to retrieve it for Hitler to take over the world, but all Kai explicitly wishes to do with the Heart is taking over China and apparently nothing more, so he doesn't use his resources to the maximum potential.
  • He is seemingly loyal to Kong Tien's cause, as he swears in her ritual to offer his soul and those of his servants to her eternal service. Chang even credits her for having given him the power to wield the Heart of the Dragon.
