Kai Chisaki (Japanese: 治崎 廻 Chisaki Kai), also known by his villain name Overhaul, is a major antagonist in the My Hero Academia franchise. He served as the main antagonist of the Shie Hassaikai arc and the secondary antagonist of the Dark Hero arc.
He is the leader of the Shie Hassaikai, a Yakuza organization comprised of villainous Quirk-users. Following the defeat of All for One, Chisaki believes he is destined to become the next ruler of the criminal underworld and plans to destroy the current Quirk society and return the Yakuza to its former glory.
He was voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in the Japanese version of the anime. In the English dub, he was voiced by Kellen Goff, who also voiced Funtime Freddy and Rekka Hoshimiya. He was voiced by Ho San Lee in the Korean version of the anime.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General/Past[]
- While he did lose his entire family and was homeless before being taken in, he destroyed any tragedy he had with his actions and the fact the boss tried to raise him benevolently and guide him on a better path, yet Kai chose to deal drugs and do things against the Boss's will.
- Even as a child he had violent tendencies and would kill people for disrespecting the Yakuza, causing fights with rival gangs.
- He willingly made his boss ill in order to take control over the Yakuza after he found out about what he planned to do towards Eri.
- He very much crosses the Moral Event Horizon when he brutally tortured Eri (who is only a 6-year-old girl), putting her through a childhood of abuse by cutting her arms and legs open to collect her blood cells. Once Eri ran out of blood he would deconstruct her (which kills her and is noted by Chisaki to be a very painful process) and then reconstruct her, which happened presumably hundreds of times.
- It was so bad that even the Boss, who adopted him, and was willing to see good in him, refused to ever forgive him, frankly informing him he would be chewing him out for the remainder of his life.
- He puts constant blame on her to make Eri feel as though she deserved her punishment, calling her cursed and putting the deaths of those killed by him on Eri's fault, making her severely depressed and believe she is worthless.
- While he would occasionally give her gifts, it was only to manipulate her and gain her loyalty so she wouldn't run away.
- His actions left an impact in Izuku's subconscious that allowed Shigaraki to use his form to attack him during their final confrontation.
- While he seems to have a good working relationship with his right-hand man Choronostasis, whom he's known since they were kids and isn't shown mistreating him like his other minions, it's likely that he doesn't actually care for him and only treats him well for pragmatic reasons.
- While he did express some form of sentiment to the League of Villains, intending to bring out their full potential, he still was only using them for his goals and demonstrated no genuine care for them.
- Although he claims he was only acting on the best of intentions for the Yakuza, his "good intentions" are far too warped to be a genuine extremist, in which his good intentions are to crash down society so the Yakuza can take over the world with him as its head, showcasing himself to be just a simply power-hungry mobster.
- Despite the high heinous standards of My Hero Academia, he easily stands out for his brutal torture of Eri and he also has personal villainy towards her due to blaming her for the deaths of people that Chisaki killed himself just to break her and destroy her life. In fact, his abuse towards Eri was so severe that she couldn't smile for months due to the PTSD and depression forced onto her by Chisaki.
Present[]
- Killed off and horrifically fused the Reservoir Dogs with wreckage (although he did bring them back afterwards).
- When Eri escaped and stumbled upon Lemillion and Deku, Kai attempted to lure them back in an alley and murder them both, only stopping when Eri comes back to him.
- Will kill anyone who touches him or calls him by his first name.
- Takes in suicidal people just to use them as human shields.
- Killed Magne and blew off Mr. Compress's arm simply for touching him.
- As revealed in the manga, although he could easily heal the scar Magne gave him, he chooses not to for no reason other than to serve as a wordless, threatening reminder both his side and the League suffered losses.
- He is brutal toward his minions, killing them without remorse if they happen to fail him or using them if he needs a human shield. Even Tomura Shigaraki was appalled by his lack of regard for his henchmen.
- One of his minions, Kendo Rappa, tried to defeat Overhaul, but every time, Overhaul would kill him off with his quirk and reconstruct him.
- Murdered Sir Nighteye by impaling his stomach and giving him a painful death (making him the first villain in the series to kill a major hero) and tried to kill Deku and Lemillion. He also severely injured Lemillion by impaling him with his spiked rocks and destroyed Lemillion's Quirk for a bit by shooting him with a quirk destroying bullet, even taunting him about this.
- Threatened to kill his minions unless they fought the heroes with him, leading to them all being arrested.
- Fused with Shin Nemoto and later Rikiya Katsukame against their will, allowing him to take complete control over their bodies.
- He attempted to destroy all Quirks via his Quirk-destroying bullets so that the Yakuza (a criminal organization) could rule the criminal underworld.
- Although Tomura Shigaraki and Mr. Compress destroying his hands made him unable to heal his boss from his coma, it was not played for sympathy as he deserved it due to his actions and his abuse towards Eri.
- Assisted Lady Nagant and All For One in trying to capture Deku.
- He angrily calls Deku a "diseased maggot" when he tries to speak despite Deku having saved his life moments earlier.
- When reminded of Eri after being rescued by Deku, he only focused on how he could use her powers to wake up his boss, showing no remorse for his treatment of her, something Deku calls him out on.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has genuine love for his boss, seeing him as a father figure and was attempting to bring the Yakuza back to power in order to pay him back his “debt” due to his boss taking him in as a child. He only put him in a coma when his boss threatened to kick him out of the yakuza, genuinely believing he was acting in the boss’s interests and that it was for his own good, even intending to bring his boss out of his coma once he finished his plan. After having his hands destroyed (which removed his ability to use his powers), he panicked while remembering his boss and realized he can’t undo what he had done to him and when released from his cell in Tartarus, the first thing he does is call out to his boss, affectionately referring to him as "father". When Izuku promised to help reunite him with his boss if he apologized to Eri for everything, the only thing he can think about is reuniting with his boss and apologizing to him showing how much he cares for him.
- In fact, the guilt of his boss still being in a coma appears to have almost completely broken his mind, as Kai can only think about him. He doesn't focus on anything else, continuously muttering that he wants to see his boss again after having broken out of Tartarus, demonstrating how much he means to Kai. He also seems to show some remorse for what he did to his boss, as he really wants to reunite with him now and later admits that he wants to apologize to him. When Chisaki reunites with his boss, he profusely apologizes to him for letting him down while tears stream down his face, demonstrating how deeply he cares for his boss.
