King Joron I Blacktyde is a ruler of the Ironborn and is briefly mentioned in The World of Ice & Fire, a companion book for the A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy book series, written by George R.R. Martin.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He captured Gyles II Gardener, tortured him to death and then had the corpse cut into pieces and attached the pieces of human flesh to his fishhooks and jokes that he is baiting his fishhooks with a “a chunk of king”.
  • Later in his reign, he and his army pillage the Arbor, a fairly big island with a lot of settlements which is part of the Reach. The Arbor is considered to be one of the richest places in the Seven Kingdoms. The text says that he "swept across the Arbor with steel and fire" which means that he has undoubtedly killed a lot of people during his pillaging.
  • He has kidnapped every woman under 30 from the Arbor earning him the nickname "Maidensbane". The Ironborn kidnap women as a custom to turn them into salt wives, which means that these women and young girls would be turned into sex slaves for Joron and his army who can do whatever they want with them because they would be their property.
  • He is not mentioned to have any redeeming or sympathetic qualities by the text.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He fails the System Standards to other Ironborn rulers like Euron Greyjoy, Dalton Greyjoy and Qhored Hoare who, according to what we know about the characters, have sexually enslaved more people than Joron and have pillaged more than Joron. However, Joron still manages to be one of the worst Ironborn rulers with him pillaging the Arbor which contains many settlements and is one of the richest places of the Seven Kingdoms and him kidnapping and sexually enslaving every woman below the age of 30 from the Arbor. Him torturing a captive to death and then cutting his corpse into pieces to bait his fishhooks is also a depraved crime even if it's still not quite enough to make him stand out compared to Euron, Dalton and Qhored.
