~ Johnny Boy Soprano to his son Tony Soprano. |
Giovanni Francis Soprano, best known by his nickname Johnny Boy Soprano, is the posthumous overarching antagonist of the HBO series The Sopranos and a major character in its 2021 prequel film The Many Saints of Newark.
He was an Italian American mobster who served as the captain of the DiMeo crime family and the founder of the Soprano family's crew. Johnny Boy was also the brother of Corrado Soprano, the husband of Livia Soprano and the father of Janice, Barbara and the show's protagonist Tony Soprano, making him partially responsible for shaping Tony into the ruthless crime boss he would become on his adulthood.
He was portrayed by the late Joseph Siravo in the show and by Jon Bernthal in the prequel film.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Unlike his hard-working and well-meaning father Corrado and just like his brother Junior, Johnny Boy preferred to join the mob instead of looking for an honest job to make a living.
- Was a horrible family man. Despite marrying Livia Pollio, Johnny Boy couldn't stand her (once even shooting through her hairdo and humiliating her during a welcome home party) and routinely cheated on her and constantly abused their children Janice, Barbara and Tony, with Tony receiving several beatings from Johnny Boy with his belt.
- As for his adultery, to be fair, Livia wasn't an ideal wife as she only married him to escape from poverty and otherwise couldn't stand him either, if what Tony says about his father is any indication, but that's still not an excuse to be unfaithful, especially in the ocassion when Livia was miscarrying a child but Johnny Boy preferred to stay with his mistress Fran Felstein and forced Tony to lie for him by saying they were at a baseball game.
- Cut off Mr. Satriale's pinky finger because he didn't pay him the money he owed and showed little concern for Tony's mental statue once he became aware that Tony witnessed the attack, instead justifying to him that Satriale had it coming for not paying him.
- Attended a mobster meeting with Junior at the Rideland carniver and brought his daughter Janice along as a foil.
- Hated African Americans, but showed a willingness to finance the F--Note Records as long as he could profit from young black musicians.
- Tried to shoot Harold McBrayer dead.
- Even after his death, his actions eventually led Tony to become a cruel, unfaithful and ruthless mobster just like him, making Johnny Boy partially responsible for all of Tony's actions as a crime boss.
- He was also responsible for Janice becoming a delusional narcissistic hypocrite.
- Giving Tony's dog Tippy to his mistress, which shocked Tony greatly.
- While he possibly loved his daughter Barbara, as shown when he hugged her when he got back home, it's too brief to be preventing.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Loved his mentally ill brother Eckley by providing for him until his death and, for all his faults and despite their constant arguments, also seemed to care for his brother Junior, joining the mob together and teaming up in multiple criminal enterprises.
