Nothing can stop what they deserve! Death is their gift!
~ John Wade's bloody message about his victims using Bill Sawyer's corpse

John Wade, also known as The Pale Grin, is the main protagonist of The Happyhills Homicide horror video game and the main antagonist of its sequel, The Happyhills Homicide 2 - Out For Blood.

He is a serial killer who sets out revenge upon all of those who harmed him in the past as a janitor where he was nearly killed in a fire. He serves as the archenemy of Detective Bryan Pawalski and later Mr. Carpenter.

In the sequel, his influence is felt as another copycat killer imitates him which caused him to get mad and to continue his killing spree.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He is a sadistic serial killer who gruesomely targets, stalks, and murders at least 22 people from his past and tapes himself giving them the most painful and creative deaths he can.
  • While some of his victims were a little harsh to him in the past, which he calls justice by killing them (even using at least three of their corpses to write bloody messages that say they deserve it), it in no way excuses his sadistic methods of killing.
    • While some of his victims were bad people (like Gordon Baker, Mad Jack, Tyler, and Chad), he goes beyond the point of being a vigilante and targets people (like William Sawyer) who had no criminal record, proving he kills out of vengeance.
    • Furthermore, he is willing to target people completely unrelated to his tragedy. He kills dozens of officers searching for him and also an innocent comatose woman simply to lure one of his victims, who was seemingly just a random person to him.

The Happyhills Homicide 2 - Out For Blood (A Trip Down Memory Lane)[]

  • As a child, he murdered his abusive mother Grace Carpenter on Halloween 1967 by pushing her down the stairs.
  • On Christmas 1976, he murdered his alcoholic foster father by using a power drill on his skull. He then framed his adoptive brother Martin for the crime, leading Martin to serve over 13 years in prison for his crime.

The Happyhills Homicide[]

  • He broke into Gordon Baker's house and stabbed him in the back of the stomach 16 times before stabbing his head.
    • While Gordon deserved it for being a pedophile, John's motive for killing him was not out of vigilantism, but rather revenge.
  • He electrocuted a woman with a radio while she was in a bathtub.
  • He had a gardener get his leg stuck in a bear trap and shredded him into mincemeat with a riding lawnmower.
  • He drenched Hank Wallace in gasoline and set him on fire.
  • He cut a lumberjack in half with a chainsaw after stabbing him in the back.
  • He used a nail gun to shoot a security guard in the back of the head 17 times.
  • He tripped the teenage Tyler on a bar of soap set by him and had his jaw broken on a table that he landed on, then stabbed him in the mouth when kicking the table.
  • He killed Tyler's friend Chad by bashing him in the head 11 times with a football helmet.
  • He slashed an office worker with a fire axe nine times.
  • He decapitated two women (one even being sliced in the mouth) in an amusement park with a ceiling fan.
  • Caused a man's bullet to ricochet back into his eye socket by holding a trash can as a shield.
  • Stabbed a man ten times through the back of the stomach until he was cut in half with a machete.
  • Impaled a fisherman under the chin through the top of the head with a harpoon.
  • Stabbed a sleeping woman 21 times in the eyes with a clothes hanger.
  • Bashed a chef's head against a burning grill 11 times while pouring scalding coffee into his mouth.
  • Impaled William Sawyer with a pitchfork and pushed him into a hay baler.
    • Unlike some of his other victims, William had no criminal record and at worst was only a jerk to him back when they knew each other.
  • He strangled Officer Martin to death with a chain because he happened to be at the wrong place.
  • Threw a baseball bat at Madison's head, causing her to die from falling down the stairs from breaking her neck, legs, and arm.
  • He unplugged an innocent comatose woman's life support so he could lure in and electrocute Doctor Hawkins with a defibrillator.
  • He stabbed 15 gangsters to death sent by Mad Jack to get him. This goes beyond self-defense as John was the one hunting down Jack in the first place.
  • He killed Mad Jack by shooting him once in the throat, five times in the chest, twice in the face, once in the leg and once in the eye with crossbow bolts.
  • He killed 22 SWAT members while searching for the mall janitor, eight of whom he bashed their faces in with a mallet, then used a hostage as a human shield while shooting eight more guards. He then ran over eight guards and the mall Janitor in a stolen van.
  • He attempted to kill Detective Bryan Pawalski in their confrontation.

The Happyhills Homicide 2 - Out For Blood[]

  • As a result of killing his sister Madison, he would destroy their father and turn him into a mass murdering vigilante in his search for him due to wanting to avenge his daughter and wife.
  • His crimes inspire journalist Jeremy Dalton to become the copycat killer, where Jeremy brutally murders a civilian to boost his reputation.
  • After knowing that there is a copycat serial killer, he decided to prove himself that he's better than him by killing an arcade worker with a sledgehammer before crushing him to death with a weight.
  • He electrocutes a welder to death.
  • He bludgeons a museum guard to death with a mace.
  • To get Bryan Pawalski's attention, he brutally murders Bryan's brother by trapping him in a beartrap and dropping him into a meat grinder.
  • He killed Jeremy's cameraman, Clay by bashing his head in with a camara while on live TV and writing in his blood for Jeremy to meet him at Craven Lane.
  • He kills a Priest by brutally stabbing his chest and head with a sharpened cross. Though he deserved it for taxidermizing 4 people and was about to do the same to a woman he kidnapped.
  • He massacres a police station to capture Amanda for indirectly causing the Westpine school fire. He strangles police officer Hank to death with a pair of handcuffs to steal his uniform and breaks into the armory. He then stabs at least 7 officers in the station and stows away on Amanda's armored escort, where kills at least another 5 officers before kidnapping Amanda.
  • He kills Trevor and Andy in a subway. He inflates one of them with a fire extinguisher until he bursts and chases after the other. He assaults the train conductor and runs over the other one with the train.
  • On Halloween night of 1989, he captures Bryan Pawalski at Craven Lane and forces him to play 3 Saw like games. In the first game, Pawalski must free himself from an amusement park ride before it crashes into a buzz saw. For the second game, he makes Pawalski play a shooting-range game where each time he failed, his hands would be pieced with nails. For the third game, he has Pawalski find 6 pieces to an amusement park mascot suit and put them on Jeremy Dalton, during which at least 3 other dead bodies are found in the playscape. When Pawalski equips Jeremey with the mascot suit, they cut him as John reveals he put razorblades in each piece, and orders Pawalski to put them all on Jeremy to free Amanda, leading Jeremy to bleed to death.
    • While Jeremy was guilty of murder and fraud, the nature of his death was still excessively brutal.
  • When William Carpenter arrives at Craven Lane, John forces 7 hostages to kill William or their collars will explode, leading William to have to kill all of them, or all but one who John will execute if spared by William.
  • Even after Pawalski played his game, John still kills Amanda by having her fed to an animatronic dragon.
  • He rams Pawalski with a roller coaster.
  • He attacks William with a box cutter.
  • When Pawalski and William team up against John, John manipulates William into turning against Pawalski by revealing photos of Pawalski neglecting to protect Madison the night she was murdered. This succeeds in destroying their friendship and forces Pawalski to kill William in self-defense.
  • Even in his final moments, he taunts Pawalski for killing William and claims Pawalski's guilt will eventually consume him.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a genuinely tragic and sympathetic backstory. During childhood he would be physically abused by his mother a lot while his dad was away on military service, not spending enough time with him nor helping out with his mother’s abusive methods. Billy would eventually snap and kill his mother and be placed in the foster care system for 7 years before being adopted by the Wade family. There, Billy endured more abuse from his alcoholic stepfather before killing him as well. As a high school janitor, he was relentlessly harassed and bullied due to his ugly appearance, with the only person who was ever nice to him being Madison, while nobody else wanted to be his friend. He was also incredibly poor since he lived in the school closet. Eventually, two football players decided to throw a flaming bag into his home, which caused it to burn down, and John was scarred and left with no home, which motivated his revenge spree in the first place.
  • Despite being creepy and obsessive towards her, he genuinely loved Madison for being the only person who was nice to him, and he felt remorseful for accidentally killing Madison and left a message in blood saying that he was sorry about it.
  • He has a literal pet the dog moment where he pets and keeps the dog of one of his victims.
