His name is Glanton. He's got a contract with Trias. They're to pay him a hundred dollars a head for scalps and a thousand for Gómez's head.
~ Toadvine introducing Glanton

John Joel Glanton is the secondary antagonist of the late Cormac McCarthy's 1985 historical and anti-Western epic novel Blood Meridian. He is based on the 19th-century scalp hunter of the same name.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Pure Evil?[]

  • John Joel Glanton regularly demonstrates that he is a massive racist and will usually act on his racism by means of mass genocides on various native peoples.
  • Glanton threatened a gun seller when he didn't agree with the price of the gun, despite using all the bullets of it during his test of it and would have likely killed the man had Judge Holden not intervened.
  • Glanton broke the leg of his dog in order to tame it.
  • Glanton has killed thousands of people just because of their race; men, women, and children. He would also scalp them, and then sell those scalps for profit.
  • Glanton holds no alliance besides that of the Glanton Gang, as he betrays both the ferry and the Yuma Indians to make them fight each other.
  • Even taking his final breath, Glanton held no regrets for any of the things he did.
  • Overall, he has no redeeming qualities and is an incredibly detestable character.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Though he's certainly heinous, John Joel Glanton is not as evil as the novel's main antagonist: Judge Holden, who has just as many resources, was a major influence in Joel's genocide, and is implied to have raped multiple people (including children).
