See now that's right! It's not some damn lie! Look we can settle this, we're reasonable men. First we're gonna beat Daryl to death, then we'll have the girl, then the boy, then I'm gonna shoot you and then we'll be square!
~ Joe on his plans for Rick's group

Joe is a major antagonist in AMCs The Walking Dead, serving as the main antagonist of the second half of season 4, and also as the villain protagonist in the web series Red Machete episode What We Become. He is the ruthless and sadistic leader of the Claimers.

He was portrayed by Jeff Kober.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

Background[]

  • He leads a group called The Claimers, who raid houses while killing people in order to keep their supplies, while raping women.
  • Instills rules onto the group, saying that anything they “claim” will be theirs and anyone who lies will be punished via death. While he does show come care for his men, he is also shown to be toxic with them, not above abusing them at times.

Red Machete[]

  • Does nothing while a man is attacked by walkers, allowing him to be eaten while he and his group steal his supplies.
  • Has a guy get beaten to death by his men after robbing his house.
  • After catching two people robbing his camp, he cuts their hands off before killing the two brutally off-screen.

The Walking Dead[]

  • He mentions beating a dishonest man to death while laughing about it.
  • When discovering Michonne’s clean shirt in the house, he plans an ambush on her and whoever she is with and allow his men to rape her.
  • When catching Len for lying about taking Daryl’s food, he had his men beat Len to death as punishment.
  • Ambushed Rick, Michonne and Carl out of revenge for Rick killing Lou (although it was out of self-defense) and planned on killing them.
  • When Daryl tries to convince Joe to not kill Rick, Joe has Harley and Billy beat Daryl down and has Michonne at gun point by Tony.
  • He has Dan try to rape Carl while Rick watches, saying he will kill him after Daryl is beaten to death and his men rape Carl and Michonne, taunting him about it as he holds him hostage.
  • Even considering the high heinous standard of TWD, he easily passes it as he kills innocent homeowners and gets his men to rape the women, as well as inciting the rape of Carl Grimes (a teenager).

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He does genuinely care for his men, including Lou, whom he wanted revenge for after Rick murdered him and left him to turn. However, since he probably cared for Lou only to use him and has commit rape by proxy, it's a minor prevention.
  • He has been shown to have a light sense of honor, such as not punishing Daryl for when he tried to claim a rabbit because he was not aware of their rules.

Trivia[]

  • While Near Pure Evil in the TV series, his comic counterpart, Andy, is unable to be Near Pure Evil, due to failing the heinous standard too much to count.
