Jafar is the main antagonist of Liz Braswell's 2015 novel A Whole New World, a "what if …?" of the Disney classic Aladdin in which one imagines what would have happened if Aladdin had not been able to take the magic lamp. He is therefore based on the film's main antagonist of the same name.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He lacks any of the comedic traits of his animated counterpart and is much more cruel and serious.
- While he does have a tragic backstory of being sold as a slave when he was a child, never experiencing understanding and affection from anyone and working hard to survive, he is far past it due to the nature of his crimes.
- He killed his parrot Iago to perform a dark ritual which would tell him who could enter into the Cave of Wonders to retrieve the Magic Lamp for him.
- Upon getting the Magic Lamp from Aladdin, he tried to murder him with a dagger. Upon failing to do so, he let Aladdin and his monkey Abu be buried alive in the desert.
- He sadistically killed the Sultan by pushing him off the balcony under the horrified eyes of Princess Jasmine and the citizens of Agrabah with his new magic powers because Jasmine refused to bow to him.
- He established a dictatorial regime in Agrabah, setting up Peacekeeping Teams, secret polices which patrolled the city to monitor its citizens, enforce the law, and kill them if necessary.
- Upon becoming nervous that Aladdin, Jasmine, and their friends stole some magic books from the Atrazak mountains, he tightened his regime by distributing food in exchange for loyalty oaths or by setting people on fire.
- He searched for Jasmine and mercilessly killed any citizens who didn't meet his request after questioning them personally.
- He subjected the Genie to torture for aiding Aladdin, Jasmine, and their friends.
- He threatened Duban, one of Aladdin's friends, to have his father and brothers killed after locking them in a giant hourglass unless he surrendered with his resistance movement.
- He created a team of living dead, including a resurrected Razoul, and gave them uniforms to fly, which had sewn a piece of the Magic Carpet, whom he cut in pieces.
- Before dying, in a final act of spite, he used his third and last wish to ask the Genie to let the magic die with him, taunting Aladdin and his friends that they would have a hard time in restoring Agrabah back to normality.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely cared for Iago, as while he killed him in a blood ritual, the ritual explicitly calls for "the blood of one's most beloved", and after the sacrifice, he put tons of portraits and insignia all over his army honoring Iago with no pragmatic reason, gets extremely upset when anyone brings up him and acts like Iago is still around. All of these show that while Jafar did do it, he did not want to and regrets having ever done it as he lost his friend.
