Sorry, man, just no scenario where this guy lives.
~ Jack to Walter before he kills his brother-in-law Hank.
Hey, remember! There's still the kid.
~ Jack Welker to Jesse Pinkman after Andrea's death, referring to Brock.
You want your money, right? Huh? You want to know where it is? You pull that trigger, you're never gonna-
~ Jack's last words before his death when Walter White shoots him in the head, thus avenging the deaths of both Walt's brother-in-law Hank Shrader and his DEA partner Steven Gomez in the process.

Jack Welker, also referred to as Uncle Jack, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Hank Schrader) in Season 5 of Breaking Bad and one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Todd Alquist) of its 2019 sequel film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.

He is the leader of a White Supremacist gang, the uncle of Todd Alquist and the main hitman-turned-final adversary of Walter White. However, despite initially working for Walt in different tasks, such as having Gustavo Fring's men killed, he ends up betraying him by killing his brother-in-law, stealing his money and continuing his drug empire while Walt is in hiding.

He was portrayed by Michael Bowen.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Despite stating he has standards such as greed, lying, tattle tailing, and brutality, it is shown to be either hypocritical or egotistic, as he is willing to still rob Walt of 80 million dollars, giving him a barrel only because Todd had respect for him.
    • His anger towards being called a liar by Walt is especially hypocritical as just minutes prior he lied to Walt and claimed he was no longer in the meth business.
  • He is never presented for sympathy in any way, form, or measure. He's also just as bad, if not worse than villains like Hector Salamanca and Lalo Salamanca.
  • Although the franchise's heinous standard is quite high, he still passes it due to his limited resources consisting of a nephew, a gang of Neo-Nazis and his gun. He also has the most severe personal villainy towards Walt and Jesse overall given he killed the former's brother-in-law Hank in front of him despite being told not to do it and also left the latter with lifelong trauma by betraying, enslaving and torturing him for about half a year, with even Badger and Skinny Pete being horrified by what Jesse went through.
  • Despite having a few comedic moments, they rarely, if ever, separate from his cruelty.

In the Past[]

  • He is a Neo-Nazi who presumably committed numerous crimes in the past.
  • Confirmed to have raised his nephew Todd Alquist into the monster he was.

Breaking Bad[]

Season 5[]
  • He ordered the murders of ten of Gus Fring's loyalists at three separate prisons within a two-minute timeframe at Walter White's request.
    • These murders were shown to be brutal, as the prisoners were shanked heavily to death and one was even set on fire.
  • He slaughters Declan's crew at Lydia Rodarte-Quayle's request, and when an injured Declan tries to crawl away, he personally shoots him in the head.
  • He intentionally ignored Walt's order of not going to the desert and that the hit was off. Upon their arrival, Jack instigated the shoot-out by ordering his henchman Kenny to open fire on Walt's DEA brother-in-law Hank Schrader and his partner Steven Gomez. This consequently resulted in both DEA agents being killed in the resulting shootout.
    • Moments after instigating the shootout that killed Gomez and left Hank mortally wounded, Jack personally executed Hank by shooting him in the head - even when Walt pleaded with Jack not to do it by exposing himself as Hank's brother-in-law and offering him to take all of his barrels containing $80 million in exchange for sparing Hank.
    • Hank's death left a major emotional effect on Walt, with his identity as Heisenberg being exposed publicly after Walter's family turned against him when they believed that he murdered Hank and his entire drug empire being taken away by Jack and his gang as a result. All of this led to Walt temporarily kidnapping his infant daughter Holly White, assuming a new identity and moving to New Hampshire and not returning to Albuquerque for nearly six months.
  • He steals at least $70 million from Walt.
  • He enslaves Jesse Pinkman as a meth cook for six months, with it being shown he and his men have tortured him for amusement.
  • Laughs sadistically at Jesse's testimony to Hank and Steve Gomez, due to him crying the entire time.
  • He reacts apathetically to Todd's recent murder of a child, only being angry that Jesse snitched about the deed and almost killed Jesse himself before Todd convinced him not to.
  • He forces Jesse to watch Todd kill Andrea to punish him for attempting to escape his compound, and threatens to kill her young son Brock next if he tries to escape again.
  • He wants Kenny to kill Walt when he returns to Albuquerque, seeing him as a threat.
  • In his final moments, he tried to offer the location of Walter's remaining money in exchange of his life being spared, which fell on deaf ears as Walter gave him a well-deserved shot in the head.
  • He was responsible for Walt's death since he had to sacrifice himself to kill Jack and his gang with a machine gun while knowing they wouldn't easily give Jesse up, which ended up in Walt being shot and killed in the blast radius.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad movie[]

  • Despite his well-deserved death in the finale of Breaking Bad, his and his gang's torturous treatment of Jesse Pinkman has shown to have quite traumatizing effects on the young man, with Skinny Pete and Badger showing sympathy to their friend.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has genuine care for Todd and his fellow Nazis:
    • With Todd, he loves him as if he were his own son, which is made evident by how Jack continues working with Lydia simply because Todd respects and desires to have sex with her rather than any personal greed. He was also willing to spare Walt due to his talk with Todd after Hank's death and gave him a part of his money (a barrel which had over 10 million dollars in it) simply because Todd respected the man and would've been devastated by his death.
    • With his Neo-Nazi gang (especially with Kenny), he is shown treating them well and it's mentioned he takes them to restaurants and water skiing.
      • Him not mourning his gang members' deaths when they are all gunned down or Todd when he is killed by Jesse in front of him is not a subversion, as he was clearly doing his best to stay calm after being wounded so he could talk Walt out of killing him.

Trivia[]

  • One of the early concepts Vince Gilligan had for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie involved bringing Jack Welker back as a ghost that would haunt Jesse Pinkman during his journey from Albuquerque to Alaska by threatening him all the way, but it was ultimately discarded due to Gilligan feeling that Pinkman had suffered too much by this point and Welker returning from beyond the grave would have felt too "dreary". Had this concept been kept in the finished film, it would have made Welker even worse.
  • He is one of the two Breaking Bad Near Pure Evils who only appear in one installment of the franchise, with Jack only appearing in Breaking Bad and the other being Lalo Salamanca who only appeared in Better Call Saul.
