Izanami is a demon and an important recurring character in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, most notably serving as the overarching antagonist of Persona 4.
She is a goddess that is interested in humanity, and wants to fulfill their deepest desire. She is also responsible for all of the events in the game, as she is the one who awakened Personas inside Yu Narukami, Tohru Adachi and Taro Namatame, and as such also allowed them into enter the TV World. She did this because she wanted to learn more about humanity and their desire.
She was voiced by Chizu Yonemoto in the Japanese versions of the games, Karen Strassman in the English dub, and portrayed by Shoutaro Mamiya in Persona 4 Visualive the Evolution.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- She awakened the ability to enter the TV World for Tohru Adachi and Taro Namatame. This leads the former to indirectly murder Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi, and the latter to endanger several teenagers by pushing them into the TV world thanks to Adachi manipulating him into thinking that pushing them there would save them. And Izanami is indirectly responsible for this.
- She attempts to drown the entire world in fog, after believing that is what humanity has desired after observing Adachi, which would result in everyone turning into Shadows, pretty much giving them a fate worse than death as Shadows are a dull husk of negative emotions.
- Demeans Marie as a stunted failure despite being responsible for her previous state as well as being a part of her.
- While other gods in the series have attempted to wipe out humanity, Izanami stands out due to turning everyone into Shadows.
- While one could argue that she fails to Adachi, who attempts to do the same thing as her with lesser resources, Adachi couldn't have done it in the first place if not for Izanami granting him the powers to do so, thus making Izanami stand out.
- In all endings except the True Ending, she gets away scot-free without getting punished for her crimes, biding her time to unleash the fog on humanity again once the time arrives.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- She is slightly affable as, despite her smugness towards the heroes, she can be polite towards them and her last words towards them are her congratulating them for beating her.
- She is also an extremist, as her intentions of wanting to do what humanity desires was genuine and completely altruistic, not to mention Adachi's actions being the reason she strayed from her path until Yu and co. humbled her.
- In Persona 4 Golden, Marie, or Kusumi-no-Okami, states that Izanami is a piece of her that split off from her, and that she is humanity's unconscious wish, and that Izanami is the part that represents wanting to grant humanity's wish. This likely gives her moral agency issues.
Trivia[]
- Izanami is the only NPE to come from Persona 4.
- She was originally Inconsistently Heinous, but was later moved to NPE.
