NOTE: This page is only about the Netfilx Drama version of the Hwang Jang-Soo and as his webcomic incarnation was not voted as Near Pure Evil. and thus, only the Netfilx Drama version of Hwang Jang-Soo's info and crimes should be put here.

You just don't like your face asshole.
~ Jang-Soo to Jun-Ho.
Seokbong, I'm sorry. Seokbong! Damn... It's my fault! No... I've sinned to die! It's my fault! My... I... I... I... It's my fault! I'm not saying let's just skip it! Please save me! I'll turn myself in! I'll pay for the crime! God damn it! God damn it! Please save me!
~ Jang-soo cowardly begging for help.

Hwang Jang-Soo (In Korean: 황장수, Hwang Jang-Soo) is the main antagonist of the anti-Conscription Korean Netflix Drama, D.P Season 1. He is a sergeant in the 103rd Infantry Division's military police force, and as the leader of the special task force of the 103rd Infantry Division, he is a corrupt soldier and sadistic bully who enjoys harassing his successors as his hobby and main job is to abuse his many successors even when his discharge is nearing.

He was portrayed by Shin SeungHo.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He was a tyrant who abused the power of the leader of the special military police force and harassed and abused numerous successors in the military.
  • He opened the letter from Jun-Ho's mother and read it in front of other personnel for the purpose of insulting Ahn Jun-Ho and insulted him by calling him a beggar when it was included that his mother's salary had increased by 50,000 won.
  • He said that Lee Jung-Soo's lotion had disappeared, and he assaulted and harshly acted on the personnel in the dormitory. In the midst of this, he made Private Jo Seok-bong lie on the floor of the dormitory and even used him as a human chair. He also carried out harsh acts that were prohibited even in the military, such as placing a helmet on his arms and making him take a riding posture.
  • He called his successor "Royal Jelly" and opened his successor's mouth and spitted phlegm into his mouth. Ahn Jun-Ho, who had just moved in, almost suffered from his harsh actions.
  • A nail sticked out from the wall on the side of the room where it was on the same level as the recruits' crown, and he often pushed his successors toward the nail and injured the back of the head. Judging from the description of the work, Ahn Jun-Ho was the only one to avoid the nail, and it seemed that all the others were injured by this act.
  • He beat Seok-bong and burned his face with a cigarette. And overall, the actions he had done with Seok-Bong were responsible for making Seok-bong the final antagonist later in the film.
  • He made Jo Seok-bong take off his pants and lit his conspiracy with a lighter, saying he would do the waxing for free.
  • He forced the youngest of the dormitory to tell him how many days he had left before going to bed and turning off the lights.
  • He forced Jo Seok-bong to carry out his absurdity and harshness on his successors. He even tried to make Jun-ho beat a newbie soldier.
  • It's a bit vague as to whether he really regretted his villainous deeds. After he was discharged from the military, when Jo Seok-bong, who defected from the military, came to his house, he did not apologize at first and beat Jo Seok-bong, but when he was in danger of being killed by Jo Seok-bong, he immediately apologized to Jo Seok-bong. Rather than regret and reflection, it seemed right to view this as a cowardly act of begging for life when a real death threat approached.
  • Overall, he has absolutely no redeeming qualities that make him sympathetic, expect for the only prevention below.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Ultimately, despite his heinous behavior and the abuse he inflicted on Jo Seok-bong, Ahn Jun-ho and other soldiers, the story and message of D.P is meant to show how the South Korean military conscription system and absurdity can turn anyone into a horrible person. As a result, the whole theme of it prevents him from standing out. And in society, he is portrayed as an ordinary citizen who works at a convenience store and earns intermittently, showing that he was also an average Korean male who was forced to join the military due to the conscription system. So none of the conscripts from the D.P. can count as Pure Evil unless they have been proven to be bad and horrible people in society before they even join the military.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Near Pure Evil in D.P. However, only Hwang Jang-Soo's Netflix drama version counted, because his webtoon version massively failed the heinous standard.
  • It's likely his status would change when D.P Season 2 comes out.
