The unnamed Hotel Manager is the main antagonist of M. Night Shyamalan’s 2021 horror film, Old.
Under the façade of a manager for a hotel, he is a researcher for a pharmaceutical company called Warren & Warren where he conducts unethical experiments on tourists with lifelong drugs to learn how they will effect them. He is the cousin of Idlib, as well as the archenemy of Trent and Maddox Cappa.
He is portrayed by Gustaf Hammarsten.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Pure Evil?[]
- At some point after learning about the aging beach, he decided to take advantage of it and run trials on unaware tourists who have medical disabilities with lifelong drugs produced by Warren & Warren Pharmaceutical to see how the drugs affect those that take it.
- He reveals that he ran at least 73 trials under these experiments resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people, including Guy and Prisca. While most of these trials are offscreen, there’s evidence that people had been killed on the beach as their belongings are left abandoned there.
- He’s also not above child experimentation, as Trent, Maddox, and another child named Kara were children when they entered the beach. Not only that, but Trent impregnated Kara resulting in her giving birth to a baby child who died instantly from the aging beach. This makes the Hotel Manager indirectly responsible for both proxy rape and infanticide.
- The aging beach also caused Kara’s dog to die offscreen, according to Jarin.
- Due to the drugs wearing off, Patricia suffered from constant seizures resulting in her death.
- What’s worse is that excluding Trent and Maddox, no one was able to escape the beach including one person who nearly escaped before they met their demise on the beach as well.
- Nothing implies he shows any care for the company he works with, as it’s likely he’s only working with them for having similar goals. There’s also no evidence to prove that he has any care for his own nephew, Idlib.
- While he does hold a vigil for the tourists that died during the 73th trial, this is only because they had made a breakthrough in his work and not out of respect.
- His actions would be so bad, his nephew Idlib had to give Trent and Maddox a secret message to tell them how to escape the beach, which is revealed to be through a long coral tunnel that wouldn’t be affected cause anyone to pass out. This would lead to the Hotel Manager’s arrest, and prevented him from running anymore trials.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]
- He seems to somewhat be a well-intentioned extremist as he ran the trials in order to use the drugs that he potentially believed could help save people with health problems. Though, due to how horrible his actions are as a result on working on this goal, this is relatively a very minor prevention.
