“ | It's an ideology where you can kill people and you won't be punished at all, in fact it pleases Lord Jashin even more if you do just that. | „ |
~ Hidan explains the Way of Jashin |
Hidan is a major antagonist in the Naruto anime and manga series. He is the archenemy of Shikamaru Nara, after killing his mentor, Asuma Sarutobi. He is a member of the Akatsuki and was partnered with Kakuzu. He was one of the newer members of the Akatsuki who was defeated by being buried and decapitated alive by a trap set by Shikamaru while his teammates, Naruto, and Kakashi were battling Kakuzu.
He is voiced by Masaki Terasoma in Japanese, and by Chris Edgerly in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Although he is comedic, this does not detract from his evilness because it is mostly meant to show how utterly insane he is.
- He's a fanatic who worships the evil god Jashin that is only out for death and destruction.
- In the past, he killed many people in his own village simply because he was angry it had become a tourist attraction.
- He tortured Yugito Nii and handed her over to the other Akatsuki members to extract the Two-Tails.
- He slaughtered a temple full of monks just so he and Kakuzu could kill one of them, Chiriku, whom bounty placed by the underground black market.
- He tortured and killed Asuma for attempting to intervene in the deal with aforementioned black market and even similarly within its bounty list. Later on, he even taunts Shikamaru and Choji about killing Asuma because he knows how much the jōnin meant to them as their teacher.
- Unlike other Akatsuki members, Hidan has no tragic past nor compelling reason why he joined Akatsuki. He is just sadistic and saw it as an opportunity to spread more chaos.
- While he arguably fails Naruto’s standard, his crime of killing many of his clansmen is unique in the franchise, as well as his brutal torture of his victims. He also is the weakest member of the Akatsuki, having no special abilities other than his immortality.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- In the light novel Akatsuki Hiden, Hidan shows respect towards another Jashinist Ameyuki, whom he allows to kill all the inhabitants of Shangri-la and get his revenge against them, and when he kills him, Hidan makes a prayer for Ameyuki, refusing to speed it up even when Kakuzu asked him to, calling Ameyuki a martyr.
- Though a minor prevention at best, he respected other forms of religion in some degree, finding Kakuzu's idea of attacking a temple full of monks just to claim Chiriku's corpse as stated previously blasphemous and only participated as per his said partner's insistence.
Trivia[]
- Hidan, Kakuzu and Black Zetsu are the only three members of the Akatsuki to be considered Near Pure Evil.
