| “ | My crew was as carefully chosen as the disciples of Christ, and I will not tolerate stowaways. You will be flogged. And when we port into Cuba to resupply, God willing, you will be flogged some more. And then enslaved on the sugar plantations for the rest of your miserable lives. To the brig. | „ |
| ~ Hernán Cortés after capturing Tulio and Miguel. |
Hernán Cortés (full name and title Don Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano, Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca) is the overarching antagonist of DreamWorks' 3rd full-length animated feature film, The Road to El Dorado.
He is the greedy leader of the Spanish expeditionary army who wants to conquer the "new world" (the Americas) in the name of Spain and steal the gold of the locals.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close To Being Pure Evil?[]
- While it could be argued that his attitude towards Miguel, Tulio, and Tzekel is justified as the former 2 hopped aboard his ship illegally and the latter was unable to show him where El Dorado is, the punishment he plans to inflict onto the former 2 is far too severe to justify the 2 of them accidentally getting on his ship, and him punishing Tzekel-Kan simply shows that he doesn’t tolerate failure (even if the latter deserves it).
- As he leaves Spain, he proclaims that he is going to conquer the New World in the name of Spain which implies that his military conquest is going to involve a lot of casualties.
- After he catches Tulio and Miguel on-board his ship without him allowing them to be there, he decides to have them flogged and then sent into slavery to the sugar plantation for the rest of their lives.
- After he finds Tzekel-Kan and the latter tells him about the country of El Dorado which contains a lot of gold, Cortés allows Tzekel-Kan to lead him to the place with heavy implications that Cortés plans to kill most of the people living there and take the survivors into slavery.
- After Tzekel-Kan fails to lead him to El Dorado because Tulio and Miguel had sealed the entrance, he orders Tzekel-Kan to be taken away, presumably to be turned into slave, although Tzekel-Kan truly deserved it for his action against El Dorado.
- While he has an army of men, it is unknown if he cares about them or not, although it is heavily likely that he doesn't because of how evil and vile he is.
- He is arguably the darkest villain in the movie, as he has no comedic moments or redeeming traits with Tzekel, despite being worse, has a few comedic moments.
- While he did ultimately fail to find El Dorado, he still was never punished for any of his crimes and gets off scot-free.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]
- His actions rely on Fridge Horror because Cortés never clearly states what he plans to do to the people of El Dorado once he reaches the city and while he proclaims he would conquer the New World, there is no focus on potential casualties.
- Even if this was given some context, he still fails the heinous standard to Tzekel-Kan, who kills people with less resources using just his magic while Cortés has his men and their muskets.
