Alistair Crump, also known as the Hatbox Ghost, is the main antagonist of the 2023 comedy horror film The Haunted Mansion based on the horror attraction of the same name.

He was portrayed by Jared Leto.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He murders his own father, though this is lessened by the fact that his father abused and disowned him for crying too much at his mother's funeral.
  • He lures several elites to his lavish parties before killing them all and burying their bodies in a special compartment of his house.
  • After getting decapitated and becoming a ghost, the Hatbox Ghost would drive people into killing themselves, often by impersonating a loved one. Upon death, the Hatbox Ghost would trap their souls within the Haunted Mansion. In death, he has accumulated 66 victims, his ultimate goal being to sacrifice the thousandth willing soul to escape the Haunted Mansion and use his dark powers to influence the world.
  • Traps Madame Leota inside a crystal ball after driving her client, William Gracey to suicide.
  • After Ben, Gabbie, Travis, Harriet and Father Kent contact Gracey’s spirit who tells them to talk to Madame Leota for answers, the Hatbox Ghost terrorizes them upon seeing them as a threat to his plans now.
  • He feeds off Ben's grief over his wife’s death, nearly driving him to kill himself.
  • He terrorizes every spirit in the ghost realm, making them afraid of him as some of them are forced to serve him.
  • He scares Ben when he encounters him in the ghost realm.
  • Possesses Bruce to prevent Ben and the others from getting an object that held significance to him.
  • When that fails and Ben begins to heal from his grief, the Hatbox Ghost goes after Travis, a young boy, and pretends to be his father to murder him and take his soul.
  • After Ben saves Travis, Crump threatens to kill the boy and Gabbie to coax Ben into sacrificing himself.
  • As Harriet and Madame Leota begin to banish him after Ben tricks him, Crump threatens to haunt his friends for eternity.
  • Tries to kill Ben one last time by using the promise of seeing his wife to no avail before he is kicked by Ben and banished for eternity.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • According to Professor Bruce Davis, the Hatbox Ghost was crying a lot during his mother's funeral, which shows he genuinely cares for her.
