Colonel Hans Landa, also known as The Jew Hunter, is the main antagonist of the 2009 Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds. He is a Standartenführer in the SS and one of Adolf Hitler's best agents, as well as Shosanna’s arch-nemesis.
He was portrayed by Christoph Waltz, who also voiced Mandrake in Epic.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He antagonized and murdered many Jews during his career to the point that he received a reputation for effectively finding and killing Jews.
- He murdered Shosanna's family, including 10-year-old Amos, while they were hiding under the floorboards at Perrier LaPadites house, taking sadistic satisfaction in doing so.
- While he does spare one family member, Shosanna, this was only so Shosanna could live with survivor's guilt.
- He enjoys tormenting and psychologically torturing his victims, regardless if they're the people he sets out to kill. This includes LaPadite during his interrogation and Shosanna when he converses with her at the restaurant.
- He murdered Bridget von Hammersmark.
- Although he later helped Aldo Raine and Allies to assassinate Adolf Hitler in the theatre, he did so out of self-interest instead of any moral obligation.
- He is a traitor who is willing betray his own allies to save his own skin.
- Unlike many of the Nazis who commit atrocious crimes out of a genuine (but very misguided) belief that they are helping Germany, Hans commits atrocious crimes entirely out of self-interest.
- While he does have some funny moments, he is still taken seriously in-universe.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely cares about one of his men. He negotiates for his safety with the American government and when the man in question is shot by the "Bastards", Landa shouts at them, calls them mad and says they are going to pay for that.
- He shows some sense of honor, as he keeps his end of every deal he makes, and when he made his demands to the US generals for enabling Operation Kino, he initially asks for the Congressional Medal of Honor just for himself before reconsidering immediately afterwards and instead demanding all members who participated in Operation Kino to receive it. There is no indication he did this for selfish reasons.
Trivia[]
- Hans Landa is, alongside Adolf Hitler, Calvin Candie, Victor Vega, Elle Driver, Stephen, and Marquis Warren one of 7 Taratinoverse villains to be Near Pure Evil.
- The film’s original script gives him an additional prevention as when one of his men questions why he spared Shosanna, Landa admits that while she likely wouldn’t survive anyway, he considered shooting a teenage girl in the back to be beneath him.
