Hamegg is the secondary antagonist of the 2009 computer-animated film adaptation of Astro Boy.
He is the caretaker of the group of orphaned children Astro befriends who initially passes himself off as a kindly and fatherly figure to him before the film later reveals that he's regularly hosting gladiator games where sapient robots fight each other to the death out of a sense of fantastic racism towards the robots themselves, even trying to force Astro and another robot named Zog into them.
He was voiced by Nathan Lane.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He regularly hosted gladiator fights where sentient robots fought to the death, with it being made clear that he has hosted these types of deathly games for a while.
- After explaining the robot gladiator games, he begun tasing Astro to unconsciousness while revealing to the orphans that he's a robot. This causes Cora to be heartbroken, now realizing Astro didn’t tell her the truth of what he is.
- He put Astro into one of his robot gladiator games and had several dozen robots attack and try to kill him, only for Astro to slay them.
- He tried to get Astro and Zog to fight each other and when they didn't, he begun tasing Astro with the intent of deactivating his bolts, before Zog caused him to fall down and nearly crushed him to death with his foot if not for Astro stopping him.
- After President Stone captured Astro and Hamegg lost respect from the audience, he made an attempt to move someplace else to get richer while trying to abandon the orphans to fend for themselves.
- While he has his fair share of comedic moments, they don't detract from how seriously his actions are taken with the whole concept of the gladiator games he hosts being treated with horror and Hamegg himself being portrayed in a despicable light for his actions.
- While President Stone beats him in the scope of his actions, Hamegg sticks out for a fair lack of resources in comparison, being a mere mechanic and a gladiator host in the low life slums whereas Stone is a president of a whole city with an army and plenty of technology to boot.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- While the film builds up the gladiator games he hosts as something awful, when they're shown onscreen, they're portrayed as a fun action sequence with the robots in the games being happy to try to kill Astro and portrayed as hostile and needing to be slain. Though the games do have weight, they're offscreen with them being mentioned and conveyed as horrifying through dialogue in contrast to the onscreen portrayal which doesn't have weight to it on its own.
