Gunmar is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Skrael) of the Tales of Arcadia franchise.
He is the tyrannical ruler of the Gumm-Gumms who wishes to bring forth the Eternal Night so that he can destroy the human race and conquer the world with the help of the evil witch, Morgana. He is also Jim Lake Jr.'s archenemy.
He was voiced by Clancy Brown, who also played Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, Uka Uka in the Crash Bandicoot video games, President Luthor in Justice League, Mr. Freeze in The Batman, Long Feng in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Yakone in The Legend of Korra.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General/Background[]
- While seeming to be made of evil as the 101 Chapters of Troll Lore claims Gunmar to have been born from a Heartstone corrupted by warfare and bloodshed during the war for the Surface Lands, nothing confirms it is an inhibiting factor to his agency to further support the claim, as Gunmar himself claims he can be capable of compassion and can actually have positive traits like genuinely loving his son, so as a result, has agency.
- He killed the Shattered King, the beloved king of the Quagawamps, as his very first kill.
- He corrupted the Trollhunter Tellad-Urr to serve his cause.
- He killed Orlagk the Oppressor, thus taking over the Gumm-Gumm army and converting them to his side.
- He had the scholar Bodus and his students hunted down when they found a way to kill him.
Wizards[]
- While he did save Jim Lake Jr. from King Arthur's forces after the former traveled back through time to the 12th century, it was only by accident as he didn't even notice that Jim was there.
- He killed one of King Arthur's soldiers in front of him to make an example to those who go through his territory.
- When his Gumm-Gumm messenger told him that Arthur and his soldiers crossed Killahead, Gunmar brutally killed him just because he brought him some bad news.
- After brutally training AAARRRGGHH!!!, Gunmar ordered him to go to the trolls of Dwoza and tell them that if they don't join him, he would kill all of them.
- He ordered a Gumm-Gumm to bring Morgana to him even though she is standing in broad daylight; when the Gumm-Gumm walks closer to her, it crumbles to stone.
- Before the Battle of Killahead Bridge, Gunmar had some of his own troops roll out into the sunlight and turn into stone to kill many members of King Arthur's army. During the battle, he intends to kill everyone on the other side, having no interest in taking any prisoners.
Trollhunters[]
Season 2[]
- While he spares Gnome Chompsky, it is only so he can send a message to Jim that he'll make an ocean of blood out of his loved ones, and even give out a list of the people he'll kill to make it personal to him, making it dishonorable.
- He uses his Decimaar Blade to brainwash a Gumm-Gumm into committing suicide by jumping into a hole to be devoured by a Nyalagroth despite said Gumm-Gumm's begging, simply because the latter failed to obey him.
- He tortures Nomura for entertainment, and later puts her in an arena match in a battle to the death against the current Trollhunter, Jim Lake Jr., to break the latter's will so he could be used to open the Killahead Bridge so Gunmar can escape the Darklands.
- He left most of his Gumm-Gumm army trapped in the Darklands after leaving, these lost Gumm-Gumms later died after the Eternal Night began, as the earthquakes destroyed the Darklands.
- He kills another of his soldiers when he failed to stop a truck, even though he was helping him, this action shocks even Dictatious.
- He crashes a woman's car and eats her as she screams in terror.
- He brutally beats Draal before brainwashing him.
- He tries to force Jim to kill Draal while possessing the latter.
- In a vision made by the amulet, it is shown that if Draal became the Trollhunter, Gunmar would've been able to get out of the Darklands and spread chaos around Arcadia. Some of the fallen would've been Jim's mother, Toby, Steve, Stricklander, and Draal.
- Despite the Janus Order conspiring to release him from the Darklands, Gunmar massacres them just because he held no more need for them, brainwashes Otto Scaarbach, and disguises him as himself just to taunt Team Trollhunters that they're too late to stop him because he's infiltrated Trollmarket with the help of Queen Usurna.
- When a troll named Bork tells him that she wouldn't accept him as her leader when he came to Trollmarket, he uses his sword to turn her into a Gumm-Gumm and tried to use her as an example to make the others bow to him.
- He invaded Trollmarket and turned several trolls into his brainwashed minions.
Season 3[]
- He attempts to kill Dictatious because he didn't give him what he wanted, only sparing his life because he could still be useful to him. Later on, after finding out from Morgana that Dictatious is a fraud, Gunmar attempts to kill him without any hesitation.
- He murders Draal with Angor Rot, and leaves Angor to die afterward for no other reason than because he's "served his purpose".
- He releases Morgana so she can unleash the Eternal Night upon the entire planet Earth so they can conquer it together and annihilate mankind.
- He didn't care when Morgana killed most of his troops as long as she could bring the Eternal Night.
- Although he works for Morgana and doesn't betray her, he really isn't loyal to her as he only works for her so they could bring the Eternal Night.
- During his last fight with Jim, he nearly kills him and says he will make him his first human slave.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely cares for his son, Bular, as he grieved his death in the Darklands.
