I am the bishop of the Southern Church, and you are obligated to protect me! Now do so and be quick about it!
~ Grégoire to the Black Eagles.

Grégoire von Varley is a minor antagonist in the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and a major antagonist in its 2022 spin-off sequel Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

He is the abusive and greedy father of Bernadetta von Varley, the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Adrestian Empire, and the lord of House Varley. While not seen very often in the first game, his impact on his daughter was significant and monstrous.

He would later make his appearance in the second game, where he would serve as a major antagonist in both the Azure Gleam and Golden Wildfire routes, and a supporting character in the Scarlet Blaze route.

He is voiced by Reggie Marcus in English, while he is voiced by Satoshi Mikami in Japanese.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General/Background[]

  • Like the rest of the other six houses, he joined the Insurrection of the Seven (which was led by Duke Ludwig von Aegir), which would shift the power of authority from Emperor Ionius IX, making him one of the people responsible for the Empire's corruption due to both Ludwig and Volkhard von Arundel's rule, as well as the future villainy of Edelgard von Hresvelg.
    • Unlike Leopold and Waldemar (who were implied to regret their actions and join Edelgard to atone) or Volkhard who fled to Faerghus to protect his sister Anselma and niece Edelgard, Grégoire held no regret for his actions.
  • He would heavily abuse Bernadetta both psychologically and emotionally, all just so he could groom her into being an obedient and desirable wife.
    • One of his abusive acts was tying her up to a chair for hours, all just so she could pay attention as he "taught" her.
    • It's heavily implied that he would also physically abuse her, which is more evident due to her anxiety of being physically touched or carried around.
    • He would also force her to never socialize with any commoners, mainly due to his classiest views.
    • Following Bernadetta's anxious and shy nature, he eventually stop his abuse but would treat her with a cold indifference, which is a sign of negligence.
    • Overall, because of his overall abuse towards Bernadetta, she would be an extremely anxious, shy, and paranoid individual, making it a bit hard for her to socialize with anyone. Even as the years passed by, she is still a bit anxious and paranoid, and is even afraid of seeing her father whenever she mentions him, not even bothering to hide her hatred towards him.
  • He nearly killed Yuri Leclerc (The Ashen Wolves leader). While he did try to assassinated Bernadetta, this is still a horrible act for two reasons:
    1. Yuri hesitated to kill Bernadetta, mainly due to their friendship. This implied that Yuri would've spare her and left, if not for Grégoire's arrival.
    2. Yuri believed that Grégoire was merely protecting Bernadetta, but this doesn't hold up due to his horrible abuse and the fact he sees her little more but as a valuable asset to gain more riches and influence.
  • Even though he does not appear in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, his abusive impact on Bernadetta is still evident and he does have sufficient characterization to portray him as a selfish and greedy abuser who treats his own daughter like a tool.
  • In addition, it is clear that he is completely despised by most across Fódlan for many reasons, including his greedy and corrupted nature, his abusive treatment of Bernadetta, and his poor religious teaching.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes[]

The Scarlet Blaze & Golden Wildfire Routes[]
  • In the prologue of the Scarlet Blaze route, when he learned about the coup against both Arundel and Ludwig, he immediately tried to distance himself from the two, claiming he was nothing like the latter, something that Waldemar quickly noticed.
  • Despite serving as an ally in both routes, the man barely contributes to the war and rather hides away from the potential threats that could kill him.
    • It's also made clear that he has a massive ego, as he believes himself to be a very important figure for the Empire, when he's nothing more than a pawn.
The Azure Moon Route[]
  • He quickly supported both Ludwig and Thales' regime after the two took advantage of a mind-controlled Edelgard.
  • During the Battle of Garreg Mach, he would set fires around the Monastery in order to destroy the Kingdom forces.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Despite his personal crimes on Bernadetta and Yuri, and to some extent Edelgard due to participating in the Insurrection of the Seven, he ultimately fails the heinous standards to the rest of villains in the Fódlan Saga who have done a lot of worse than he could, especially to the likes of Thales, Nemesis, Edelgard, Cleobulus, and even Ludwig.
  • Because of his paranoid nature, he is rather too pathetic and comes across as somewhat comical, to the point that nobody can take him fully seriously (outside of Bernadetta and to some extent Yuri).
    • However, given how extremely loathsome he is, all of these are minor preventions.

Trivia[]

  • Due to his extremely abusive treatment of Bernadetta, Grégoire is considered one of the most loathsome antagonists in the Fire Emblem franchise.
    • In fact, in Three Hopes, Grégoire could die in the Scarlet Blaze route, but his death doesn't even result in failure, which left many players who wanted him dead very happy. He can also receive karmic justice if he's killed by Bernadetta and/or Yuri in the Azure Gleam route.
