You aren’t leaving, Susie. You’re mine now.
~ George Harvey before raping and murdering Susie Salmon.

George Harvey is the main antagonist of the 2002 novel The Lovely Bones. He is a dollhouse builder and a sadistic pedophilic serial killer and rapist who murdered several females before raping and murdering his neighbor Susie Salmon.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Murdering and sometimes raping or mutilating six girls/women out of sadism.
  • Torturing and murdering animals in his spare time.
  • Explicitly raping and murdering his 14-year-old neighbor Susie Salmon by luring her into his underground "hideout", before successfully ridding of any evidence that he murdered her.
  • Implied to have violated and/or murdered more females after Susie's death.
  • Stalking and attempting to victimize another woman when he moves to New Hampshire.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a partially tragic backstory where his bipolar mother got gangraped after attempting to rob a group of men. His family was not well-off financially and his father was implied to have been abusive. While this is no excuse for his crimes, it is played for sympathy; even Susie Salmon, the girl he raped and killed, couldn’t help but feel bad for him when she learned that he a had a troubled childhood whereas she had a happy one.
  • He displays occasional insecurity/remorse for his crimes, viewing himself as a pedophile who can't control his urges.

Trivia[]

  • If his tragic past had been excluded and he hadn't felt remorse, he would have qualified as Pure Evil. This is the case with his film version, where the omission of his pitiful past and lack of remorse makes him Pure Evil.
