General Robert Byng also known as the General is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Anton Verloc) of the 2018 indie game We Happy Few.
He is a highly respected (and feared) war veteran in the dystopia of Welligton Wells and in charge of the town's military camp.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He denounced his wife to the Indian authorities for being a revolutionary, causing her to die in jail, separated from her daughter.
- Even if, by surrending to the Germans, he stated that he thought Welligton Wells' army was too weak and wanted to avoid a massacre, it was more out of cowardice than protection, knowing his coward nature.
- In plus, it makes him responsible of hundreds of children being taken away from their parents to concentration camps.
- Even if it's not proved, it is also possible that they were killed here, knowing what the Nazis did in World War II.
- It also makes Byng responsible of people starting taking Joy to forget their sadness.
- He let Victoria being addicted to Joy and help the Bobbies hunt Downers.
- Even if he asks Sally to live in his safehouse and offers her his protection, the game clearly shows he doesn't truely love her:
- First, it's an act of cowardice, willing to let Welligton Wells slowly die while cowardly hiding.
- He has massive food suply in his safehouse, while poor people are starving outside.
- It is made clear Byng cares more about Sally's body than Sally herself, like she's young and pretty, and it's more perverted lust of possessing her than rather true love.
- When Sally smacks him with a heavy object and tries to escape, he assaults her.
- He blackmails Sally to take her away from Gwen, which would cause her to starve to death without her mother or, even worse, being found by a Joy Doctor.
- If Sally had accepted to stay with Byng, it would have been a lot possible that he would have raped her.
- Even through it's unknown if he actually cared about Victoria or if it was out of pragmatism, he rescued her from jail only to make her the same proposition few hours before he made it to Sally.
- He was planning to leave Welligton in his boat, and would have probably forced Victoria to follow him if she hadn't pushed him.
- Even if Verloc and Faraday had the same resources yet ended up worse, Byng manages to stand out because he was responsible of all the children being taken away from their parents by the Germans, and perhaps even killed, but also of the many Downers beaten to death by the Bobbies.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He is a bit sympathetic, as it's possible he got his coward nature because of the horrors he saw in India, as he was a loving husband before.
- He shows some standards, as he found Victoria's plan of adding Joy into the water "quite daring", even considering the people and they could not add Joy into their food like if they were dogs.
Trivia[]
- Byng is the only We Happy Few character to be Near Pure Evil for now.
